I use a Mac and I love it :-) I do use imovie, but not for images. For images I use LightRoom5 from Adobe. It's an excellent editing software that also catalogs your images so you can find them easier on your hard drive. Adobe has great instructions videos as well.

Hi Wally

I have used a Mac for several years and have iPhoto and aperture. I thought that iPhoto was pretty limited and I didn't like the way the pictures are stored, well organized but not easily accessible without opening the program.

I switched to using photoshop elements 11, I like both the organizer and the editor. You can get the program for less than a $100.

To try out iPhoto there are lots of online lessons at Apple.com and check google for YouTube videos.

Good luck and if you have any specific questions just ask on this forum and someone will be sure to help you out.

I'm a graphic designer and I've been using a mac since the early 1990s.

iphoto is not photo editing software unless you are using it to edit p&s camera or a camera phone photos. iMovie is a video editing/movie making software.

As others recommended, Lightroom 5 is great. And it is fairly easy to learn especially if you're new to photo editing. LR 5 is also way better at cataloging photos. At $149 it won't break the bank.

Photoshop CS6 is also an option but it's a steep learning curve. Since it is "cloud" software, Adobe will charge you any where from $20 to $50 a month forever.

I personally use LR5 and Photoshop 5.

In iMovie you can use a mixture of video and photos or either alone (and you can add music, too) to make a movie about an event. It's a fine program if you want to make a video to show friends & family. If you want to do professional video editing, you need to go to something like Final Cut Pro.

I use a Mac. I also use iPhoto, Aperture, Elements, Photoshop, and Canon Digital photo professional for my raw images. All work fine! Learning curve for all of them is different. All depends on how involved you want to get.

I have a MacBook Pro 13 that I use for all my editing. I use PSE and GIMP to edit. I have an 8 gb iPad and use PSE & PS Touch for some editing there. It doesn't matter how bug your screen is. If you can enlarge your image to pixel size, you can edit with patience. As a matter of fact, most bad edits are the result of the editor running out of patience. Personally I do not like iPhoto for editing; it is best for organizing and cataloging. If PS, PSE and GIMP are not for you, try Aperture or Picasa.

I'm using a Mac, and like the comments above, I find iPhoto very basic. I've been using Lightroom and Photoshop Elements. I also use NIK and Topaz Labs plug-ins.

Apple has forums and there is one for iPhoto. Get an Apple ID if you don't already have one, sign in and read and ask any questions you might have. There are a lot of knowledgeable folks there. I've been on a mac for over 10 years.

I prefer Lightroom over iPhoto or Aperture, but the Mac programs do have the advantage of syncing with the other Mac programs.

All Macs have Iphoto; it is very convenient to have your card reader to link with iphoto when you download; you always have a copy of all your images on iphoto this way- so if you lose a copy of a specific photo, just go into iphoto, and there it is.
If you double click on a photo on the iphoto screen it will increase in size so that you can check your focus- and bin it if it isn't sharp !

I've been on a MAC since 1989 and never, ever looked back.
I use Lightroom and Photoshop. iPhoto is crap and holds your photos hostage...
Lightroom is great to manage your photos. It takes a while to learn but it's well worth the effort getting into it.
Photoshop is the holy grail of digital photography...
You can find tutorials for both on youtube.com

I am not sure what you mean by iPhoto holding your pictures hostage. For the average shooter I think iPhoto is fine. I try to get a good picture in the first place, so I don't have to spend a lot of time fixing it later.

After 40 years behind the lens I don't consider myself an average shooter, but I try to stay humble so I can continue to learn from more experienced photogs...

Trying to find your pictures later, in order to edit them using other software, is very tedious. I'm sure you know this to be true...

Sometimes you don't have time to get a good picture and you just have to wing it. No?

I use both Mac and Windows but prefer Mac for my creative work. I used to use iPhoto but bought Lightroom when the animal shelter I volunteer at got it for their studio set up.

That was perhaps the best $100 I spent on software. Lightroom lets me organize my photos with multiple keywords and the editing tools are very nice.

The real advantage seems to be when I go back to look for pictures of a particular dog or person. They all pop up with a simple keyword search.

You can get Photoshop Elements for less and get many of the big-bro photoshop included - but you don't get the cataloging capabilities.

I saw someone mention GIMP - which is very cool and opensource. It's a photoshop work-alike - and it is free.
