Having followed Ugly Hedgehog for a while, I have not noticed much talk about Panasonic Lumix FZ70 which has the longest zoom of all at 60x. How does the FZ70 compare to SX50 or the Nikon & Fuji counterparts ? SX50 seems to garnish the most votes so far.

For all the hype about being a 60x, it just adds the extra at the WIDE end so that it becomes a 20mm-1200mm equiv vs the SX50's 24mm-1200mm equiv. and for most of us that 4mm diff isn't much. Don't know much about the camera, but if the price is 'close' to the SX50, and if it has the fully articulating screen, hot shoe and remote capability, then I would definitely consider it as well.

Welcome to our forum! Have you tried snapsort.com to compare them. It gives a good indication of which camera has better specs. If you Google one vs the other, you will find lots of comparisons.

As most of us would agree, the difference of 4mm at the wide angle end of a zoom extends far more than any extras (say 50mm) in the tele end.

Many thanks for the info, jerryc41. It is all very helpful in comparing the various superzoom models, one of which I have to get for a trip to photograph the Komodo dragons in Indonesia.

Um 4mm at the wide end can make a huge difference...not so much at the tele end.

Well, for being advertised as a 60x zoom, changing it at the wide end widens it by 4mm. However, if they added the extra 10x at the long end, it would have added 240mm !! BIG difference!!

yeah, but when your back is against a wall and your at your max wide end, you can't go any wider...typically, you can walk closer to your object. That's why you have feet...use them, your images will look better if you get closer to them.

Not so "BIG", the increase at the short end is a 16.67% improvement! Had they added to the long end, a 20% improvement...which improvement is better would depend on individual preferences...this said, the fact is that the 60x provides a a 16.67 % improvement at the short end, with no loss at the long end....
