Iduno Loc: Near Tampa Florida

Just learned that I'll be heading to Eagle River, Alaska (15 miles north of Anchorage) for business on Jan 16 through 19. I'd like to make the most of the trip from a photography stand point but have never been there before. Any suggestions from those that may be familiar with the area would be appreciated.

Stop in at Tips Too bar and say hello!
I have had many a fantastic halibut fry in there when my Uncle owned it. He died in 1996 and I haven't been back. Fun place back then though.
But January isn't the best time of year for photo ops there. Good luck.

Will you be staying in Eagle River or in Anchorage? Eagle River is very close to Anchorage and its amenities. January is not the best of times to visit but there are many things to see and do even at that time of year. If you want, PM me and I can give you a few ideas. A lot will depend on the time you have away from the business side of your trip. If you could tack a few extra days on to the end of your trip, the door would be opened to see a number of things that the Great Land has to offer. Winter photography can be spectacular.

On Sunday mornings at 11:00 a.m in the parking lot of the VFW a lady feeds fish scraps to the eagles. Last winter when we were there we counted 80+ eagles and got lots of great photos. take the hiway on up towards Wasilla/Palmer some great op out on the Palmer Hay Flats. Good luck.

Hi Iduno: You didn't mention how much free time you will have during your business trip... My son and his family live and lived in Wasilla AK for many years. I've visited there in July when it was daylight almost all the time and I've been there in Feb when there is almost no daylight at all. Going there in Jan plan on there being very little daylight at all, if your lucky you might get a little twilight. You might have the opportunity to photograph the Northernlights.... Plan on long exposure shots in very cold weather if you do any out door shooting. You might get lucky and find a scene right out of a Thomas Kinkade painting. Bringing out the lights in the night of a street scene or cabin in the woods. Who knows what you can or will discover. Just becareful that cold can kill you if you're not prepared, and do be very aware of the moose. They are dangerous, maybe you can catch a picture of one licking salt off of a parked car. Have fun and please post your pictures of your trip.
