"Industrial" Theme

Not posted for a while. Here is one which I have been working on for an 'industrial' theme club competition for next year. I was going for the hard and a bit grungy and contrasty look. Deliberately saturated it. Taken close to sunset. Am I on the right track?

Usual camera system details - Canon 350D (Rebel XT), 18-55mm kit lens, tripod - and workflow - 3 exposures at +/- 2 EV, Photomatix 4.1 and Photoshop CS5.

Thank you for looking and commenting. Other similar work posted in the gallery section: http://www.uglyhedgehog.com/t-174554-1.html#2952314

Hey Chinaman, good to see you around. haven't posted here myself for a while, been preoccupied with other stuff. Like this a lot. I understand the saturation and the grunge, it works well. Nice leading lines and the building on the right gives a nice balance. Only glitch that I can see is that even though the horizontals are correct you verticals are off, the pic leans to the right. Run a line down the nearest edge of the building on the right and down the metal lines on the left and you can see it clearly. Other than that it works really well. Where was the shot taken? its the sort of place I would love to get a chance at.

As I said good to see you around. have a great new year.

Hi Peter
Good to know you are around still. Likewise, I have had little time and have only skimmed through each day's email, hardly posted and offered few comments. I am having a couple of weeks off at the moment.
As you can see from the original, there were some extreme converging verticals to take care off and I've ended up with what I thought was pretty good verticals & horizontals. I did notice a slight lean after posting, more noticeable on the left side of the image. It took me hours to select the sky for noise removal, by which time I didn't want to waste anymore time on it. I might work on it another time. Thank you for your comments.
The shot was taken at Port Adelaide near where I currently live. This river port is old and historical, being the point of disembarkation for immigrants as well as goods to Adelaide. It is still a working port but the interesting and accessible parts are more for the tourist & leisure trade. This structure is out of use at the moment. The building is being renovated into a community arts centre. There are lots of interesting old buildings & museums for maritime, planes and trains. Also a couple of tall ships are berthed here. Abundance of dolphins ply the river. All in all an interesting area to explore further.

I'm not a fan of extreme HDR, but really like this photo. The orange/blue combination of complimentary colors, your shifts in perspective, and your control of distortion are great. Thank you.

It appears to have to much yellow. I did some hasty Selective Color changes Cyan +58; Magenta -33; and Yellow -65. Of course this is just my added thoughts to your HDR.

Thank you ebrunner, Mercer and Gaylord.
The building is of red bricks, the metal contraption is of rusting steel and the sun was setting, hence the strong orange/yellow/red colour.

Chinaman,

Have you tried the free upgrade to Photomatix 5?

Not just yet. I have quite a few problems with my PC that need sorting out first and it involves wiping the slate clean. So I'm not installing any software until that is done. Thanks for the thought.

Thank you Glen. Most times it is useful to deliberately shoot to a theme or idea in mind. The results are often better too, compared to random shooting and seeing what turns out.
