Hi - Does anyone know how I can tell when the battery is getting low? The indicator never changes from the two slashes across the battery icon. I think it is supposed to have zero slashes/lines when empty but it never changes no matter what settings. Thanks for any help. This is my first post on Ugly Hedgehog so hope I am doing it correctly. I am using the Canon T3I.
Are you using a generic, or counterfeit battery? The factory original batteries work as you expect them to.
I have the same problem....never goes past the two slashes!!!!...

My T2i is the same. Just before it goes dead it flashes. I just carry a spare battery at all times. Pain in the ass.

Carrying a spare may be a pain, but it is also SOP. I seldom actually look at the battery indicator. When I need a new battery, I change it.
Thank you, thank you, thank you!! Now I know it is not just me!! I love being able to ask a question and have it answered so quickly.

The higher level canon bodies like the 60D have battery percentage information, but that isn't available is most, if not all, of the Rebels.
I must be the only one whose indicator works :) Both with Canon battery and no-name.
The left end of the icon turns black (to the first slash line) at first indication of low battery. Below is what I see. Interestingly, Steve's link shows black turning to white.

My T3i works just like Linda from Maine's, haven't had a problem yet. I don't do a great amount of shooting so my battery seems to last quite a while.

My T2i starts out like the second pic in your post. Never more than 2 bars. Always has been like this. Even with a grip and 6 AA.
Battery run time is normal but I get very little warning.
Hi - thanks for responding. I use both types.
Thanks for all the responses. I have a print out from Canon on the T3I showing the different levels of the battery, however, mine has never shown any change. I am going to contact them and see what they have to say. Will let everyone know what I find out.
I just bought a T3i about 3 weeks ago, and I have not had a problem with the battery indicator. It works as described by the literature that came with the camera. I recently purchased an extra battery, but both batteries (new one and one that came with the camera) are Canon batteries.

Thanks, Jim. I still don't know why mine is not working. I am waiting for a response from Canon. How do you like your camera? Have you used the video? I have yet to try it.
