You would only use the name "University of Michigan" out of BigHouse envy.
The only reason Michigan State ever won a National Championship is that they hired a Michigan Coach, Biggie Munn, who won a couple for them in the fifties and then hired 'Duffy Daugherty as head coach when he became A.D.
P.S. After playing at Michigan, my Dad was on the coaching staff with Biggie at Michigan in 1940. I've got the picture.
