Can anyone please tell me what kind of majestic bird this is.
I just took the photo this morning in the Lake Lahontan, Nevada area.
Thanks,
Klaus
I disagree, Nikonian72, the markings on the head are wrong for a Peregrine. By the color of the chest and the size of the head, I think it is a Sharp Shinned Hawk. But I have been wrong once or twice before.

Thank You Gentlemen!
I really appreciate your input!
I am not a bird person and just got this picture by chance.
What a fascinating creature though!
Sorry guys. It's none of the above. It's a male Northern Harrier.

Not sure what kind of hawk, but it looked like a hungry rascal. Based on what I can see of its meal, it would have to be a fast flyer as its eating a bird. Great shot! I really liked it.

So it is, the Grey Ghost. Who can argue with The Bird Man?
Thanks for proving me wrong, AGAIN. Pretty soon I might get one right. LOL
I agree, Northern Harrier Hawk. Previously known as Marsh Hawks.
I was out birding today and saw 3 but none with a photographable kill like yours. Good shot, thanks for sharing.

Thanks for the kind words everyone!
This guy was tearing a pigeon apart it had caught the day before and left in our backyard.
I don't have the long telephoto lenses necessary for bird photography and this was just a lucky shot taken out the back door with an old af 70-210mm Tele on a D7000.

Looks like a dead torn up Pigeon. Oh! You mean the one still standing. :-) Cheers.
