4 X 5 Crop in the view finder

I was recently shooting some head to toe shots with my Nikon D90. I post processed them to 4 X 6 easily. However, a few of the shots did not crop well to 8 X 10. Without permanently screwing up the camera, is there any EASY way to have the 4 X 5 show up in the view finder?

One suggestion that I have gotten is to get another focusing screen and mark it with a line or lines for a 4 X 5 crop. Well.... Maybe?...

Any other ideas?

That's what I do. My D3100 shoots 2:3 ratio (4X6), but I like 8X10. I figured out what 8X10 ratio would be on live view, then marked that with vertical permanent marker lines on the screen protector. Works for me.

Easiest way I know is to use the 3:2 ratio, leave a little wiggle room on the edges and crop to 4x5 during processing. Probably not what you're after, though.

My camera allows me to select a 4X5 crop and the edges are grayed out so you can see what is outside the frame. Maybe your camera does the same thing.

You can just think 8X10. I did Weddings with a 35mm and you can almost see the lines of the crop after some practice. Dave

As someone else remarked here, experience will let you visualize the format within your view finder.

Similar to another comment, I've placed a set of marks on the top, bottom, and sides of my Hasselblad viewfinder so I can frame for a 16x20 easily when composing a photo.

The D90 doesn't have a 4x5 mode, so this sounds like your best bet.

Please note that in my original response, I emphasized marking on the LCD screen protector. Initially I thought the D90 focusing screen was not removable, but it is.

The old screens (think Nikon F film camera) were very easy to change and were pretty durable, but the new - The handling for measuring and marking could very well end with a destroyed screen.
