DSLR VALUE

Since the implosion of film/Kodak and the like, electronic camera designers/producers have blossomed in a geometric fashion. At the moment, within the same price ranges, what company does the average professional or advanced hobby photographer perceive as the best value given a choice of only two - Canon or Nikon?

Given the two, it'd be Nikon...but my actual choice would be neither since both companies don't know what' they're doing when it comes to the new mirrorless technology.

Mirrorless technology is new to me. Please explain the benefits and what company has a "handle" on. Thanks

Each has their advantages and disadvantages.

Here's just one person's description...

and

As far as which company is best...it all depends. Sony, Olympus, Panasonic and Fuji are all leaders in that technology.

Asking Canon or Nikon, for any reason or point of comaprison, is like asking Coke or Pepsi, PC or Mac, Republican or Democrat. Everyone has a preference for personal reasons, or may like a third option to any of the above.

Neither.

Each brand offers models within their range that is very good at range of photographic situations. Each model has strengths and weaknesses.

It's important to note however, that limiting this discussion to just Nikon and Canon is like saying the only two auto manufacturers is Ford and Chevy... just as big a mistake.

Pentax, Olympus, Sony, Fuji, and Sigma ALL make quality products at competitive prices and with comparable image quality to the offerings of Ford an Chevy... I mean Canon and Nikon. ;) I ESPECIALLY love the features, flexibility, price point and most importantly, the image quality of Sony DSLR products... formerly Minolta. GREAT bang for the buck.

There it is, that DSLR thing again, tied to that Nikon/Canon thing again. Are you limited to Nikanon with legacy lenses? If not, feel free to check out all the new systems. You might be surprised.

I personally see no problem whatsoever with limiting the choice to the "big two".
Body only and IQ quality. I am going to lean to Nikon.
Lenses (where the real cost is) - it really will depend on the lenses chosen. Way to many options to give a proper answer.
I would say that for lens range options - I probably prefer Canon. That doesn't mean it is the cheaper path though.
There are a few exotics that can sway things sometimes thousands of dollars in either direction.

To each his own.

And while Canon and Nikon each make great products... they aren't the only companies that do. Neither is "The Best" or "The Worst"; they just sell a lot of gear. (So does Sony... BTW ;) )

To muddy the water a little further ...., Sony makes a lot of the sensors that Nikon uses. Not sure about Canon

Yes, and Nikon get better images and capabilities out of them than Sony do.
Isn't that weird?

^^^Sony makes MOST of the Sensors Nikon uses, including those for the D800/800E, universally acclaimed as having the BEST Full Frame 35mm image quality on the market right now. ;)

They put that SAME sensor in the new Sony A7R at a fraction of the cost of the D800E.

BTW, Sony DSLRs produce comparable IQ under comparable conditions as the Nikons do with the same sensors... again, with built in stabilization and at a FRACTION of the cost. ;)

From an online comparison.
A comparison which I will add did definitely come out in favour of the Sony for detail BUT they used different lenses.
My third noise comparison is between the Sony Alpha A7r and Nikon's D800e. This is arguably the most interesting of all as both share very similar sensor specifications with full-frame coverage, 36 Megapixel resolution and no optical low pass filters (or at least the effect cancelled-out on the Nikon). ..........Do note though these cameras do not have the same actual sensor.
