Should I or shouldn't I...and if so, which one?

I am thinking of buying a used D80 as a back up camera. I do not need it as I already have a D7000 but there is one locally on for sale for $250 with a Tamron 28-300 or another $200 body only.

My thinking is that it could be my "keep with me" camera that would take more of the day to day abuse. I do some traveling for work and I like to have a camera close by and right now I am bringing all my gear with me. I am thinking small bag one lens ready to go.

Am I just being greedy?

I don't see it as being greedy , more like practical .
You have a depenable camera and lens to take with you while protecting your main camera from theft or damage.
Wise move in my opinion.

I think it makes sense as well. As to which one? That would depend on what lenses you have. If you have a do everything kind of zoom, you might just take that with you and put it on the D80 body (check for compatibility first). If not, then the Tamron would be a good solution. Sounds like a plan to me.

If you do ANY photography for money, a backup camera is an absolute must have.

And that's a pretty good price w/lens.

Shame it doesn't take the same battery.
But, at least the lenses will all work correctly.

But at least batteries are not as costly as lens .

With lens is a better bargain. Body only is $230 on B&H, eBay and other sites. If you do a Google search, you'll see.

Wall E...not good enough to make money at it AND I am clumsy and already have had two lenses repaired!

I am thinking a backup is necessary.

$200 for the body sounds a bit high unless it's in realllly good shape.

I'll go sit in the other camp by myself, I say no. The D80 came out in 2006, and it's sensor is so much weaker than the D7000. I think you'd get better image quality from a used D3100. Or with the best P&S you can get for $200-300.

BTW, hello from Cambridge.

Hello neighbor! You have a good point...I was only looking at the D80 since I am familiar with it. I appreciate your insight!

But then she wouldn't get to make more use of her current lenses.

Nikon's sensor technology took a big jump forward in 2007 with the D3/D300, which replaced the D2/D200. The D200 has the same sensor as the D80, ok for 2006, not really for 2014, compared to the alternatives for the same cost. Meanwhile, Nikon still lists the D300s and D90 as current models...
