Take a look at the following chart. it's a pretty powerful endorsement of immigration in this country. However, my point in posting it is not about immigration. My point is this: if I WERE trying to make a point about immigration, I would NEVER use this chart to prove my point, as powerful as it might be.
http://www.upworthy.com/my-english-only-father-in-law-is-going-to-hate-me-for-finding-this-one-3?c=upw1Why, you might ask? Because there is nothing in the chart to say where the facts came from. The guy who created the chart could have easily made everything up, I have no idea. It looks impressive, and someone spent a great deal of time creating it, but it's just BS unless there's a way to verify it.
So please conservatives, next time you want to post something, make sure it's verifiable. Just because you uncle sent it to you in an email is not proof. And remember, most radical right wing sources (WND, or anything with the word Patriot or Eagle in it) are NOT reliable sources. They make stuff up and pass it off as fact. By the way, the CBO is a very reliable source. But at least be ready to name your source when challenged, even if it might be out there in Kookoo for Cocaoa Puffs Land, OK?
Please don't turn this thread into something about immigration. That's not my point here, OK?
Have a nice day.

How about turning this thread into something about the source of the chart - unions?

I thought you were a math teacher? The first part works out to 4.6%, the second to 4.5%, so if those two are true, then how does the last one come to 14.28%? The chart is hogwash, you're correct in not relying on it for anything. I just wonder why you bothered to post it.

Rob, you misunderstood the chart - the last graphic is attempting to portray the fact that 1,840,000 jobs is 1/7th of ALL the manufacturing jobs in the US.
The study was done by a group called "Partnership for a New American Economy", don't know anything about them or what agenda they may have. Not even sure of the source for their numbers.
There are about 12 million manufacturing jobs in the US - that number is from the BLS stats and also from the NAM.
1.84 million is about 15% of 12 million.
You simply misunderstood the chart.

Hmmm....I'm not sure I'm reading it right, but it appears to me that immigrants took 1/7 of the manufacturing jobs, and 6/7 remain. Please correct me if I read it incorrectly.

Media Matters.org:
http://mediamatters.org/aboutOnly goal is to demagog conservative positions. They, like the left, produce nothing. The chart is neither factual or correct.
V-Dare publishes similar charts:
http://www.vdare.com/articles/national-data-by-edwin-s-rubenstein-august-jobs-immigrant-displacement-of-americans-displac Similar data, different viewpoint.
Suppositions abound about the displacement of American workers v. Immigrant workers. The reality only hits if YOUR employment/retirement/home/family/opportunities are impacted. Charts, then, become meaningless.
I'm sorry, is everyone on this site as stupid as they appear?
I specifically said that this was NOT a post about immigration, and that the chart had no validity, yet now people are arguing about immigration. Go back and read my original post and make comments about the point I was making, not about the facts or non-facts in the chart.

Why do you presume that the people on this site appear as stupid? Few threads on this site (particularly in the Chit-Chat section) take only a single direction, let alone follow the thought(s) of the OP. Why should this one be any different?

Because people are using the chart I disparaged as fodder for their arguments. They're doing specifically what I said shouldn't be done, and looking stupid and proving my point about conservatives in the process.
Call me crazy but looking at that chart reminds me of when my wife goes shopping and comes home with bag after bag of stuff and says "look at what I saved!" I have always replied, "Yes dear but look at what you have spent!"
The assertion that increase in immigrants translates to increase (or retention)of manufacturing jobs is ridiculous. Prove it. You may as well say that the ebb and flow of manufacturing jobs is tied to sunspot activity.

I agree that conservatives on this site are more likely to publish unsubstantiated and / or irrelevant proof of their positions. At the same time, the liberals on this site are more likely to engage in ad hominem attacks and name calling. Neither one seems to move the opinions of the adherents of the opposing viewpoint.
If you expect tschmath to accept what you link to it must be Mother Jones or Huffington post.

I don't know why tou are speaking to conservatives about this chart. Media Matters is a Goerge Soros sponsored group. As such it is one of the most leftist blogs on the planet.
So please conservatives, next time you want to post something, make sure it's verifiable.
