Hey There!

Hello all, been hanging around the site for a couple of days now and am finally going to jump in and say hello.

I know nothing about photography from the "educated" side of things, I just know what I like for end results and try my hardest to get there. The manual settings on my Canon T3i beckon, I just have to take the plunge. I tend to stick to outdoor shoots just because the light is easier, and luckily I have a daughter, two grand babies and a couple of beloved pets that love it outside and don't mind being my models.

Have hundreds and hundreds of images that I've taken, but I promise not to upload them all and ask you how they are. A few here and there as I move forward in my learnings are fair game though. :)

Welcome Belle. Go ahead and jump into those manual settings, you'll like it. To get a better feel of how to use them though, posting a f few shots for some criquing will give you an idea of how toset them to your advantage. Keeping in mind, however that the art you see through your lens may be different from what some others see. The good thing about the hog is that most are helpful in a very positive way. Have fun and enjoy the holidays

Thanks - I know I need to just jump in, it's like that really cold pool in summertime - you know it will be fine once you do it. But I get out there and just switch back to Auto...sigh, it will happen for me. Luckily, I've captured some memories on Auto that I treasure, just want to make the leap to "art".

Happy Holiday to you too!

Well it looks like you are off to a good start. Don't be afraid to try a different angle. Like with the tree stump get low and shoot slightly up at it. I like the first shot good DOF ( depth of field). Take a look at the meta data for the leaf shot and use those settings to start with and play from there. I can tell you what settings to use to get that DOF but I find it's better if you look at how the camera shot it. Then like I said before change the settings and see what those settings do for you. You will learn fast, I know you will. Manual is not hard it just scares the daylights out of some people, why I do not know? When I first started way back in 1975 I had a Canon AE-1 and never shot in manual. After a couple of years I wanted to understand what the camera was doing so I bought a used Canon F-1 all manual and after a short time I loved it. It was sink or swim time because I would not take the other camera out

Thank you Hoss, very much! I will do as you suggest and start with the settings on the first one and shoot manual starting there, great idea. And the different perspective makes sense too. Thanks again.
