Just bought a polarizer on ebay that was supposed to be circular polarizer, even e-mailed seller to ask. What I found out was that some people consider a circular polarizer to be round as opposed to a linear polarizer. Be sure you are getting what you think you are, at least it was an inexpensive lesson.

You cannot blame Ebay itself for a bad sale, anymore than you can blame UHH for bad information. They are both open exchange forums and a 1 to 1 exchange has only to do with those involved, not the forum hosting them.

actually i have found prices on ebay and amazon to be higher than elsewhere for used equipment, plus not all the sellers are competent or honest. Buy used gear only from KEH.com . They put a 6month warranty on their stuff, are very honest, definetly know the difference between a circular and linear polarizer, and the stuff they sell is great. Not an employee (if I was id be blowing mypaychecks on equipment!!!) just a very satisfied customer. The days of ebay being a bargin hunters parradise is about over.

I am not blaming ebay, i have bought other things there and been OK
I blame myself for taking it for granted that everyone knows the difference between a circular (digital) and linear filter. Like everyone else I am trying to save a few bucks, should have bought it new.

Your heading "Ebay heads up" certainly tells everyone you are blaming Ebay, maybe you should have posted "Ebay seller heads up" and listed the sellers Ebay handle.

The thing about Ebay is that the buyers are the ones who sets the prices ... They are the one controlling factor that sets market value, NOT any company or business...

That is true in Ebays Auction environment. Trouble is, these days Ebay is more of a sellers storefront, almost 80% of the listings there are no longer "Auction" style, but are "Buy it Now" listings where the buyer has no way to influence the price or success of the product by bidding on it. Just as in any other retail store or site, a Buy it Now listing is just that, Buy it or pass it by. Ebay has changed a lot in recent years. I used to buy things there regularly, but anymore I doubt I even look there for a product unless I am looking to see what they are going for and do a comparison.

Forum topic should have been (in my opinion) "What questions should I have asked?". I, too, think the seller was not trying to "put one over on you"..they were just uninformed, and they should (if they want to stay in business) offer a full refund, including shipping. Even though your loss was small, be sure to send a feedback report, which will give others a "heads-up".

I did the same thing. Cheap Chinese lenses. If I wanted cheap I should have bought a used Hoya instead. Lots of them out there for around $5.

I would say E-Bay's always been a sellers store but some like myself I list items at the very lowest prices with make an offer as well in order to give a person a chance to get a great price on it.
To be fair if you place an item in your store instead of an auction you get a longer display time for the money.without the risk of giving your item away for nothing. Always compare but ask if the seller is interested in selling it lower make a offer and most times you'll walk away with the item.
