I have a Nikon D90 with a Nikor AFS 18-200 3.5-5.6 lens. There are opportunities to photograph eagles in our area. It does not seem reasonable to expect anything unusual at the 200 mm full zoom of my lens. Lens rental is not an option.
Question one... I have never used a tele converter, is it reasonable to expect that a tele converter would give me the added zoom and available light needed to get quality shots?
Second, if so...can anyone recommend a compatible brand that will not compromise the quality of the camera and lens that does not cost the down payment on a another lense? Thank you in advance for your help. Joe Peva
I would go with the 1.4 from Nikon for numerous reasons. It will cost you 4-500.00 but worth every penny. Anything larger than 1.4 is going to rob you of way too much light. Make sure the TC will function with that lens.
Thank you for your reply. How much zoom will that give me, 280mm? Joe Peva
yes 280......you can get more with the 1.7 but you lose light and image quality.
NO!
Do not put a converter on that lens. No Nikon TC will fit, and any that would fit will kill your autofocus. A third party TC might not even have all the electronic connections to make the lens work.
Lots of people giving advice that know not what they are talking about.
Thank you very much for those words of caution. Will heed.

invest in a used 70-300 zoom from KEH.com they have many to choose from both nikon and sigma tamaron etc, prices range from $79.00 on up. They have the best prices and are very conservative in rating their stuff. dont ber afraid to take a chance with bgn or ug rated merchandise. everything i have bought from them came in better condition then rated. also everyting sold except as is comes with a FREE 6 month warranty.try getting that on ebay. I highly recomend this company and have had superb service from them. I just ordered a 28-110 sigma lens and a nikon N-90s today with shipping came to $49.00 and change. The n-90 i picked up for ten bucks cause they say the camera body is sticky. The N-90 was at one time only second to the F-4 in the nikon line up. It is built to the professional standards. by getting a 70-300 zoom crop factorturns it to a 450mm tele, combined with shooting at a higher iso you should be alright.

Well...if you KNEW what you were talking about, you would KNOW that putting TC on a f4-5.6 will not work. And you would KNOW that the Nikon TC will not fit on that lens. I read it exactly as you wrote it.
I have that lens and the 1.4 promaster it will only manual focus.the results are less than impressive. I also have the nikon and they won't work on that lens. You need to be at least using an f4 lens f2.8 is best. I use the both the Nikon 1.4 and 1.7 on my nikon 500mm f4 with good results. the 1.4 is the sharpest. Consider buying the sigma 150-500 os lens I have some really nice Eagle shots with that lens it is around 900 to 1100 dollars.
It's not my job to know anything about that lens! I only know about what I own. This is why I told him to check! Isn't it past your bedtime anyway!

HEY GUY'S,
I don't think personal attacks are helping the poster make a correct decision, and your both right.I'am sure some off brand will probably manually focus on a lens like that but with low quality results. Also using a teleconverter on anything but fast high quality glass is a waste of time and money.
I had a Canon 100-400L series and a 2x Canon and yhe teleconverter was a waste of money as the image quality just was not acceptable to me anyway and you lost auto focus.I now have a D7000 and plan on getting the 300F/4 AF-S and a teleconverter to shoot whales and dolphins and Surfers when I get back to Hawai'i and I expect it will just barely do what I want but can't afford a 2.8 so .....
In conclusion I would not put a teleconverter on that lens unless your rich or don't have that high of expectations.
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year and Aloha
I agree and apologize to the poster and this forum!

As do I. My apologies - it was not intended as an attack on anyone personally - just a frustration with too many well-meaning responses that I see as incomplete, misleading, or just wrong. Titan just got in the middle.
Thanks everyone for your response, all is well. I did some reading after the post and decided the tele converter was not my best/or good choice and a rental lens may be a short term option.
I really appreciate the depth of concern and encouragement I have fornd at this site. Joe Peva
