Nikon made in China or Thailand

Does anyone know the difference of a Nikon made in China or Thailand, as it seems the China one is cheaper than one from Thailand. Is it more plastic or cheaper parts? Or is it warranty?

The only cheaper camera you will find from anywhere are either a knock-off (counterfeit) or grey market.

Where they are made produced or assembled does not matter.

This is valid for ANY brand and any product, from food to camera, whatever.

Personally, I prefer to purchase products from companies that have not moved production to China.

If you use a company's products, and are satisfied with them, then you are tacitly supporting their quality control methods, among other practices. Therefore, it should make no difference whether the item was assembled in Japan, Thailand, Korea, China, or the South Bronx.

Unless you feel that Nikon or Canon or whoever will purposely relax their design, production methods, quality control and other practices just because a factory is in a certain location, then it makes no difference.

The reason companies move to lower-cost production areas is just that - lower cost of production, which in turn usually translates to lower prices to the consumer.

The Chinese are not, in general, stupid people. They had firecrackers before we had the 4th of July.

However, if you already make a cheap product that is shoddy or flimsy or composed of lower-quality materials, then a low-cost production is even more attractive. Thus, the spate of junk that comes out of China as well.

Stop fretting over where something is made, and influence the market with your wallet. If you don't like materials from the Pacific Rim, nothing is stopping you from buying products made in Europe. The Yugo stands out as a good example.

Nikon makes no DSLR cameras in China. They do have production of some P&S models, some kit lenses, and some accessories in China though.

I worked over 20 years as a mechanical design engineer specializing in quality control automatic post process feedback gaging machines. Major corporations utilize "vendors" to manufacture various or all the components of their product at the lowest cost.
The dimensional integrity is of exactly the same standards of "vendors" here in the States. I watched as these "vendors" moved from the north to southern USA, then Mexico and of course to Asia. I believe the quality of major manufacturers goods, as long as the corporation wills it, is equal to what was manufactured here. I dont like it, I no longer am able to find employment in my field but cest la vie.
Best regards,
Janko

The reason why you pay $500 approximately for an entry level DSLR with a kit lens and not $1000 is because the company has reduced its labour costs by setting up factories in other countries using cheap labour. If American or Japanese workers were to make these cameras in the USA or Japan the labour costs would make the products uncompetitive in the market.
The much praised iPhone is manufactured completely in China.

None of those. It just cheaper local labour in factories set up in duty-free zones in those countries. The cameras are of uniform quality and do not as you seem to think have less or more plastic because they are cheaper.

But Nikon promotes the fact that its flagship cameras and lens are made in Japan. Is quality not a factor? Should they just move all production to China to increase profits or lower prices?

Djack,
Very true, but Nikon charges premium prices for these products. I am guilty, as are many Americans, in perceiving that Japanese made products are superior to products manufactured in other Asian countries. Witness the growth of the Japanese auto sales in the USA from silly joke cars of the late 60's to the heights of prices demanded for a used Honda with 180,000 on the odometer.
With my years of experience in the quality control dimensional measurement industry, I know that very little is left to the machine operator, no old world craftsmanship is required nor encouraged.
Today, to create a quality product, one merely has to press the "cycle start" button.
As I state earlier, I DO NOT like it, I would prefer Americans with good paying manufacturing jobs but it aint gonna happen in our lifetimes.
Sorry to vent a bit, absolutely no offence to you intended.
Best regards,
Janko

My D7100 is made in Thailand but the higher end stuff is made in Japan like my D800. I have not seen a difference in quality between them.

Thailand makes all the crop sensor bodies and all the full frame bodies are made in Japan, EXCEPT for the D600/D610 full frame which is made in Thailand due to so many shared components with the D7100 bodies.

The "Japanese" nade cars were most likely made in the USA. The reason for the success of Japanese or German products are the result of US rebuilding them after WW2 and the Marshall Plan. The US literally owned all of Japan and Western Europe. We had every right to plant the flag and ddeclare them as US territory, But we did not do that. we spent a ton off $ rebuilding and restoring them to democracy. And now they compete with us. TRhats what makes us an exceptional country. Sorry for the rant but I just couldn't help myself
