i would like to began to do a bit of close up photography - two projects i am thinking about - (1) make a few photos of the holiday decorations and then using "pro show" create a musical program - just messing around (2) a bit more serious - i have 30 japanese maples - i would like to record buds, beginning leaves and colors of spring, summer and fall foliage - i have looked at the nikon 4804 R1 Wireless -

Could you maybe suggest somethings a bit less expensive and if possible automatic

i will be using a d7100 with a tokina 100/2.8 macro or a nikkor 50 f1.4

thank you - mr toad

No flash at all besides the pop-up?

You might consider using a standard hotshoe flash with a RayFlash Ring/Universal
http://www.ray-flash.com/universal/index.php
or one of the far east clones.

OR, there are cheap LED ringlights. I bought one with 9 LEDS for about $20 on eBay.

There are after-market ring flashes that are not near as expensive as the name brands, I would take a look at what B&H has to offer.

I use the O Flash, inexpensive and does a good job with Macro and close up work. Here's a you tube video that will show you what it is all about.

It's basically a clone of the RayFlash, and requires that you already own a hotshoe flash. Which the OP didn't have on his equipment list.

I use a Polaroid 48 Macro LED Ring Flash & Light Includes 4 Diffusers (Clear, Warming, Blue, White) from Amazon $54.99, love it works great.

Why use a flash at all? Use a tripod and use natural light or rig something up. It's not like the buds will move very fast. - Dave

I would suggest a tripod and cable release and natural light,
if need be you can use higher ISO's 400, 800 and 1600 with the D7100. also manual center spot focus - (the center spot has to be set in a menu & sub menu ) and manual settings, remember its digital, experimenting cost nothing but a little time.
Have fun!!

If you are shooting outside, why flash? What do you mean by automatic?

Just about any flash with variable power, TTL and vertical adjustment will do. Add a bounce reflector for softer light.

An inexpensive ring flash will eliminate shadows. The trick is adapting it to your lens for optimum results.

I use older "Lester Dine" ring/point lights. They were marketed to Dentists for Inter oral imaging. I got my first one from my Father in Law (a retired Dentist) since then I have acquired several more. They are TTL units for Nikon but as such won't communicate with Nikon's DSLRs. I had to tape the extra contacts originally. I have since found one with a "Standard" single pin foot that I use. You simply shoot in manual & use the aperture or power setting on the back of the power unit to control the exposure...I shoot a lot of macro & I find this easier to get shots with as it is less bulky than the Ray flash or speed light with attached diffuser (which I also have both)
