How many of you are members of professional photography organizations like the PPA or similar groups? Either way what are your general feelings about them good or bad.

They are all good. You get out what you put into them.

I'm a member of NAPP. In my case, more prestige than I deserve. :D

For what its' worth, it doesn't seem to make a hell of a lot of difference ! I used to belong to a lot of so called pro organisations, but the thing common to all, is that they want your money, for not a lot in return.

Sorry you have had such bad experiences with professional organizations.

The best group I belong to is the local affiliate of the PPA.
Yes, it's a couple of hundred a year, but for that, I get 8-10 monthly meetings with teaching sessions at most, and print critiques twice a year with PPA certified judges. And for nominal sums ($39), day long sessions with national instructors about 4 times a year. We just had Lindsay Adler (http://www.lindsayadlerphotography.com/) for both a day long, and at the monthly meeting the next night.

Hey Wall-E,

I agree with you 100%. I have been a member of national PPA since 2008 and just recently joined my local group, VPPA. I have had nothing but positive experiences from this organization. The workshops are worth the price of membership alone, plus you get insurance, lawyers to help you in case of problems and much more in the form of training and business models. I am also a member of NAPP which can be very useful at times. I am full time so I take my photography serious!
