Hi everyone,
I'm interested in renting a nice prime lens to see if I'm interested in purchasing one in the beginning of the year. I have a Canon 70D and I'm interested in an everyday reliable lens. Also are there any recommendations of who to rent through? I'd like to have it over Xmas so figure at least a weeks rental.
Thanks in advance,
Laura

Hi, Laura. I've been staring at the screen for about 15 minutes trying to fathom whether "nice prime lens" and "reliable everyday lens" belong in the same question.
None the less, given those criteria, I would recommend a fast (low f number) 35mm or 50mm. But what lenses do you already have?

OddJobber,
I probably should not have used those two phrases in the same question, I'm new here and trying to understand everything at once is difficult. I have a 70D with a 50mm f/1.8. Either I am completely lost and don't understand the capabilities of the lense or should have gone with another for my first, but I read a lot about how it was a good everyday lens. So I'm asking more specifically, could you or anyone recommend another everyday lense until I'm more comfortable with my camera?
Thanks in advance, any advice would be highly appreciated.
Very confused and lost Laura

BTW, love your quote, my life's about the same except my life is a world wind of confusion.q

Your 50mm lens being one mm is considered a prime lens not a zoom lens.

A zoom lens moves through different mm's giving you the capability of bringing things closer. However, zoom lens tend to have a higher f/ number (stop) which is not as great in low light conditions as a prime lens tends to be.

Prime lens are usual made of better glass quality as well as being better (lower f stop) in low light conditions.

Your 50mm lens at f/1.8 prime lens should have excellent low light capability and be a very "sharp" lens.

I suggest you use your camera and lens combination a great deal before you seek additional equipment.

Your 50mm f/1.8 lens should be great during the holidays.

Pentony,
Thanks you so much for that lesson on prime lenses, I totally grasp the difference now due to your clear and concise explanation. I'll do what you said and not worry about a new lens and enjoy what I have currently.
Thanks again for your time and advise.

Thanks for the lens suggestion. I've actually read much about that specific lens and would be interested in trying it out. Can you recommend any place specifically I should deal with when renting a lens, funds are tight but would enjoy the experience.
Thanks again,
Laura

The 50mm f/1.8 is a nice prime lens. Congrats on getting the 70D. Very nice camera, especially if it's a starter camera for you. The 35mm f/1.4 USM L is a nice prime too. The lens I'd like to rent is the 50mm f/1.2 USM L. Good luck.

Any photographer pro or not, would have a 35/ and or 50 prime in there kit, I personally prefer the 35 over the 50. Mainly because most go to lens is the nifty fifty, i tend to go down the road less traveled, when photographing objects it tends to give a miniature look/feel, unique i think, As far as renting goes, Your only looking at. 200/250 for either the 35 or 50 , no sense in wasting. 100 on a rental.

Both the 35mm f/1.4L and 50mm f/1.2L are between $1200-$1500 new. I'm not sure why it would be a waste to rent one of these first?

Well of course you can do what you want too, just think you will waste 100/150 and then buy it anyway

Agree. On a crop 35mm might be the better choice for an everyday lens since it is not too long or too wide.

MsLala,
The best advice I've received from this forum is - If your not sure which lens to get, rent it and try it, before you buy it.
