Unfortunately I don't have the funds to afford the Photoshops software and have gotten the free Gimp. Does anyone know where I can get basic how to info ? I have almost zero knowledge of this type of software so I need to start at step one with an explanation of all the components and how to make them work. Thanks for any help you may offer.
I used the Gimp for only a very short time, then switched to Photoshop Elements. Nothing to do with the programs, just personal preferences. While I was using GIMP, I found the information "Grokking the Gimp" to be quite helpful. http://gimp-savvy.com/BOOK/ Because it is on-line, I found it helpful both to take it page by page, and for looking up certain things I wanted to do.

I currently use picasa, i find it fairly easy to use. I tried gimp and was overwhelmed by it. Granted i did not take any tutorials. I may try it again and use to posted tutorial list and go through it step by step. Thanks for posting the info.
There are some things GIMP is much better for than Elements or Picasa (straigtening photos, e.g.). A good strategy is just to Google what it is you want to do or need to know and include "GIMP" in the search. Invariably there will be multiple tutorials on that given topic using GIMP.

What are you trying to accomplish?
A fairly straightforward, free option is faststone image viewer, http://faststone.org/.

Gimp is free, but you have to learn how to use it. The learning curve will be no different than PS or PSE. What is wrong with Elements. $70.00. It is the best and most economical way to start and will probably do all of what PS ill do for you.

Very easy, go to (Utube) and enter Gimp Tutorials, there must be about 250 of them available free of charge. One thing to keep in mind, Gimp is based on Photoshop, any tutorial for Photoshop will be the same for Gimp. You can search for Photoshop Tutorials, there are probably close to at least 500 of them available free of charge.

Actually, UP-2-IT, Utube will not get you there. I know, I can get lazy too and sometimes type one letter where there should be three. Try: http://www.youtube.com - there you can do the search you need to do for GIMP tuts.

That's strange, I have about 75 of them in a file on my desk top. My reference was to use a program called Google to search for Utube, you must have heard of it?
