I've long thought they should just GIVE us the printers.

Interesting article.... I dumped my Kodak printer because I was having to buy too much ink.... and the kodak would not let me continue printing, it would just shut down.... I bought a Brother printer.... so far it seems to be better.
but I also have an Epson and this article speaks of Epson.... but at least I keep printing when it says it is low..

After 2 months I love my Brother MFC-J870DW printer. We found a place on line that sells 10 high volume ink cartridges for under $40 (

The print isn't high enough quality for photography, but is very much OK for daily use, correspondence, recipes, etc. I don't expect to ever buy another HP, Canon, or Epson printer again.

I have never tired this, but Costco will refill ink cartridges....not all but Brother was on the list that they refill.... not sure of the cost, but may try that when it is needed.... I do not print "keeper" photographs either

I have used various printers over the years and have stuck with HP. At one time HP did consider giving away the printer as the price you pay is close to the cost to produce it. Very little money is made on the sale of any printer, it is the ink where everyone makes their money. Also I have started only buying only used printers and if they die they get trashed. Since my wife has to have her own printer I only ones that use the same ink cartridges and I buy them either off Amazon or eBay by the bulk (less expensive).
I have used the following $10.80 Amazon ink set with great success on my (non-photography) Epson printer. I think they have them for other brands as well.

I used to have a Canon 9900 photographic printer. But from the hassle of keeping it color corrected and finally printing out my pictures, I found that Costco usually prints real great color corrected prints for a price far lower than I used to spend on ink cartridges.

I found the same thing to be true with Shutterfly. Costco is close by. Maybe I'll give them a try.

I love my printer and am happy printing at home. My printer does not use a whole lot of ink, so to say, it's not overly thirsty and the inks last a looooong time!

The bigger the prints are the more ink they use
I have HP C310 which I had not used for several months. When I attempted to print color the printer said all 3 color ink cartridges were empty. So I bought new ones, installed, and after 5 prints (4X6), same message appeared, cartridge empty. Any solutions.

I never print anything under 81/2 x 11 and I print about 200-300 prints every year.
