Love my new Sony A77 but I'm obviously missing a setting in that there is constant auto-focus activity with this camera. It can even be sitting on a table or in the front seat of my car, and it's constantly taking readings. Very distracting. Have looked around Hog archives and don't find an answer, nor have I discovered anything in User's Manual to correct this "hyper-focus" activity. I'm accustomed to using Nikon D300 that doesn't start AF until you hit the release button or initiate back focus. Am confidant a Hog A77 user will have the answer. Thanks.

If I understand your problem it is constant focusing of the lens.. On the front (right bottom) of the camera (is a control knob. Set it on s.

Easy fix. ;)
Go into your menu, then move over to the cog (camera settings) #1 and scroll down to "Eye Start AF." Set it to "Off". This will prevent the camera from going into Focus mode every time the EVF sensor is activated. Even with this setting urned off, the camera will however, continue the normal AF function when you depress the shutter button half-way down.
Good luck and congrats on buying a VERY powerful camera. 8-)
I STRONGLY suggest you look into purchasing this book to help you learn everything you need to know about the A77:
http://friedmanarchives.com/alpha77/^^^This is the absolute BEST book out there on the A77... hands down. An EXCELLENT resource.

BigDJim disregard what I posted earlier, I just should have checked the book myself. CHOLLY's fix will take care of the problem. I checked it out on my A77. Sorry for the wrong info on the first post.
I hope you like your new camera. I like mine better than any camera I have ever owned.
I also agree with CHOLLY about Friedmans Book. It is the best out there for the A77. Be sure to get both volumes.
I just turn the knob to manual when I am not shooting .I would not turn off eye-start

There is no off option on the focus control knob.

I bought an A77 a month or two ago. Still haven't tried 90% of what it can do (maybe more). Blows my A330 out of the water...put it on the hog classifieds, but never got a response :(

^^^Check out the Friedman Book.
I've had my A77 for almost a year and I play with it each and every day... yet I STILL haven't come close to learning all the in's and out's, up's and down's of that camera.
It is VERY powerful and versatile and with good glass up front, the image quality can compete with anything else on the market in the DSLR/mirrorless/micro four thirds range.
