I am spending holidays in Indiana, and ordered a new lens from B&H. Delivery was scheduled for Wednesday, and I stayed home all day because signature was required. It was not delivered Wednesday, "due to local operation disruption, package not unloaded from trailer, expect one business day delay". Thursday I had to leave home for one hour and missed delivery, was rescheduled for Friday. Winter storm on Friday disrupted delivery "adverse weather condition, the movement of package will resume as soon as weather condition allow". This morning it is 13 degrees, so my package is sitting on a frozen truck. Is this going to be a problem ( condensation, etc) when finally delivered?

I sympathize. We used to have to sign for every package from UPS. Now he leaves 99% at the door. Well, actually, I walk down the driveway to the truck - can't wait. Signing depends on the delivery area and the wishes of the shipper. FedEx usually, but not always, requires a signature here.

Weather delays can be frustrating. How about spending two days at an airport waiting for the storm to break? I bet you never had snow delays in Naples. :D

Should't be a problem....me I would take the lens out of the box...leave the bubble wrap on it and sit it on the kitchen table...let it come up to operating temperature slowly before handling it....hour or 2.

Have not even had hurricane since 2005, we are spoiled, miss all the bad weather. I was surprised the first school delay I saw was from fog.

We have a delay here for icy roads.

There is a good video on YouTube from DigitalRevTV. it shows a guy testing two cameras to destruction, and destruction is more difficult to achieve than you would think. Digital photo equipment is tough. If I can find the link, I'll post it.

EDIT: Worth watching

In my opinion, the cold will not be a problem with the lens. The trick is to not be too hasty to open the package. Let it warm up to room temp for a few hours before opening the package. An alternative would be to open all doors and windows to allow the inside temps to coincide with the outdoor temps and you may open the package upon arrival. 🔨😝😝😝😝😝😝😝😝😝

I know you want to open the package up but follow the advice of let it sit until it hits room temperature. Enjoy the contents of that box,its fun popping bubble wrap. :-D

You never said what you ordered, but if it photography equipt. The actual item is in plastic and the box is usually doouble boxed and the inside box in in foam. I think your main concern is how r u going to open the sucker. They go to no end to make that difficult.

It will be cold for sure...I know that here where I live when the weather is in the 20's the packages are like ice.

I'd take the merch out of the package and put it into a sealed gallon baggie if I could...if I couldn't do that...I'd not unpackage it for 2 or 3 hours. The plastic has to be SEALED for condensation to appear on the outside of the plastic...just bubble wrap won't do it..it's not sealed.

Also, you can call UPS anytime BEFORE the package is "out for delivery" and request that they hold it at the local UPS station.

That does two things:

1.) You don't have to stay home at the mercy of the driver's delivery time.

2.) You can usually pick it up in the MORNING...whereas I never get deliveries in the morning where I live.

Thanks, but my wife vetoed that idea.

Like everyone else said, no problem if you wait until the temperature equalizes before you open it up. Many photographers routinely use these lenses in freezing weather. To make you feel better, here is a photo I just took in Naples.

I always track on their website and if I can't get a "hold" at the station...the minute it's "out for delivery" then I go home to wait.
