A friend is looking for a beginners camera; they have a serious interest in learning photography. Being a Nikon owner, I inclined to suggest going with Nikon. I have experience with the 5100; is this a good place to start or should we consider a 3100 or what? Appreciate the help. DMF

The D3200 or D5200 would both be better choices, and are on sale all over at the moment. The D5200 adds the flip screen and a few other technical features, but they are the same size sensor.

Instead of orienting them toward Nikon, get them to look at what is IMPORTANT TO THEM. What you are doing is nothing helpful but prevents them to learn about what is really available.

All brand are basically equal for a beginner. Nikon is not better than Canon not that Canon is king of the hill either.

Make your friends learn about the differences between fixed lens vs interchangeable, make them learn about mirror-less camera and so forth. THAT will help a bit.

Then go onto the sensor and...

Brand preference, because you have one??? It is bullshit.

Nikon D5200 would be my recommendation. Butllshit or not it would make an excellent camera for a beginner.

I think if you have a brand of camera it is good to recommend it to friends. Not because one is better than another brand but because then you can help them when they get their camera. If you are the kind of friends that will be taking with together you can swap lenses. As you go down the road they may be able to tell you something about your camera. If answering that question in the forum I always say make a list of cameras that have the features they want and then go to the Camera Store and find out what feels best to them. With today's cameras you cant go wrong. Just My Not So Humble Opinion. - Dave

I have the 3100 and then received the 5100 as a gift. Both are great for beginners and I find the Nikon easy to use. So either of those or the latest models 3200 or 5200 would be good. Another consideration is that since you already have a Nikon, you can help answer questions. Since one brand really is not "better" than another, having someone they know personally to help with their camera, it makes sense to recommend a Nikon. These are great cameras for beginners.

Honestly, it's not bs.
Sharing of lenses and knowledge is WAY more valuable than some make it out to be.

Let's step back a second. What sort of photography are they interested in? What sort of uses and situations, how much portability do they want?

If someone wants to learn photography, they main thing they need to learn is how to look at the 4-dimensional world and capture a 2-dimensional image which conveys what they saw. The next step is to understand and control the basic parameters of the image: framing (including focal length), exposure (aperture, shutter speed, ISO), and focus. Many P&S will give enough control over these to let someone learn photography.

Yes, this raises more questions than you originally had, and it requires more thought on their part. But that's part of "learning photography". :-)

Nothing wrong with suggesting something you are familiar with already. You aren't forcing your friend to buy Nikon over another brand. We can't all be like those who have experience with several brands. If your friend wants to be a little more objective, they should widen their research scope a bit.

I started shooting with Canon back when the AE-1 Program was introduced. I stuck to this brand not because I think it's superior, but because I was comfortable with the layout and design. If I thought I could considerably improve my skills as a photographer by switching brands, I would. However, although equipment is important, for me there are more important things to concentrate on at the moment. :-)

There is a whole world beyond Nikon and Canon. I would not exclude the other players.
