Need help with loading photos into the computer

I recently shot a roll of 35mm film and had it put on a disk by the processor. When I loaded it into Iphoto, the pictures show up much smaller than those loaded from a card or the camera. I haven't figured a way to make the images larger.

Does anyone have an answer to my problem, or is there an answer?

Are you sure you're not just looking at thumbnails? You have to "import" the pictures to get the full image.

You did not say what size they are. I worked at one time for a processor and the default size when making a CD from film is quite small - way smaller than the native size.

As was mentioned, however, are you looking at the large version or the thumbnail?

You also do not say what size you are expecting, but if your digital files are from a camera of 8+ megapixels, the processor scan of film will not come close.

To get a scan of 35mm film that competes with a hi-resolution digital file most likely is beyond the capability of any local processor.

Hi-res scanning is done by a drum scanner: http://www.luminous-landscape.com/REVIEWS/scanners/drum_scans.shtml

Back when I was still shooting film but wanted digital images, I also paid for a "PhotoCD", they were something like 1500x1000 pixel scans.

The good news is that you've still got the "originals", so if there are any you want hi-res, that can be done.

I have imported the images, and am looking at the "large" image, not thumbnails. My digital photos (from a 3mp Fuji Finepix) fill my 21" screen, while the imports have a 3-4 inch grey band around them. They're that much smaller. The CD was made at a custom lab. Is this all I'm going to get?

Why don't you contact the original custom lab and get them to help you solve the problem?

I bet they'll be glad to help.

Years ago when I was still shooting film I'd have the images scanned at the same time too. It was cheap and it got me an electronic copy. But ... it also got me a small image, often the size of the slide or negative in fact, and it didn't exactly provide me with outstanding sharpness or contrast either. Basically the resolution was kind of poor. But then for $6.00 for a roll of thirty seven, you can't expect a lot.

You have two options. You can go for a 35mm film/slide scanner which is what I had done. Of you can find a professional lab that does scans from negative. In either case you can specify the size of the output image and often the resolution too. Now, if you just do this once in a while, the professional lab is the cheapest answer assuming you trust the posties to deliver your originals. On the other hand if you're talking hundreds or thousands of images in the longer term it quickly becomes cheaper to do the scans yourself with a high end film scanner.

Space bar makes them view as large as possible. If they are still small, then they're just small. Check the image size in finder and see what size they are.
