I got a wonderful opportunity yesterday, not only to photograph this unbelievably well maintained and rare car, but also to ride in it. What a thrill! It has quite a story as well:
The current owner's father bought it for farm use, and one of his sons took it to town one night and wrecked it. It wasn't damaged too badly cosmetically, but wouldn't run, so he asked a friend who lived nearby to tow it to his house until they could come back for it. There were very few of them made and parts were virtually non-existent so it took them a very long time to get back to it. They knew that there was going to be a lake built there, and it would encompass the friend's property so they thought they had 30 days to get it out. Well, turned out they had been given some incorrect info and the friend couldn't contact them (no phone and he didn't know the address) and they actually went ahead and installed the lake with the truck there! The family didn't have the funds to get it out so it stayed there until the 70's when the remaining family decided to drag it out and fix it up. Of course it wasn't done professionally but they loved it and took care of it, using it here and there, passing it down from one family member to another so the paint's not beautiful, but it runs like a dream and the wood is unbelievable for having been drowned. For those familiar with the area, the name of the lake is Lake Lure-a beautiful tourist area near Chimney Rock in NC. There have been many stories (mostly false) "floating" around through the years about how it got there, but I got the true facts from the owner himself. He gets it out on occasion and puts it in parades in surrounding towns.
Fascinating story, thanks for sharing it.

Geoff
Thanks guys! Hubby is a car nut, as nutty as they come, and I have seen many old cars, but nothing that tops this, especially with the story. You just don't run across Reo trucks every day.
love the setting for the 5th photo!

Thanks, can't take too much credit for that-it's where the owner lives. Unfortunately it's surrounded by lots of trash, etc. It did take a bit of creativity to shoot without getting that stuff. As a matter of fact, I believe I did clone out a bit here and there.

It certainly is DOOK. To be close to 100 yrs old not bad. Not much like those you post, of course but shows a lot of life in it, especially considering it's still in the same family.
thank you for posting these lovely photos of a rare find. That story is something else.

I agree with that. I wouldn't have believed it myself if I hadn't met the man in person. They give boat tours on the lake and tell the story on the tour-totally incorrectly according to him!
