There are five different versions of the Gettysburg Address? Did Lincoln read all five versions at Gettysburg? There is only one version of this great Document, the one that Lincoln read from at Gettysburg that has the line, "that this nation,
under God, shall have a new birth of freedom," period.
I did some investigation. After spending less than a minute on the "Learn the Address" website, I found this statement: "Did you know there are five versions of the Gettysburg Address? We asked President Obama to read the first, the 'Nicolay Version'." Indeed, there were multiple versions of the Gettysburg Address.
The so-called Nicolay version, which was named after Lincolns personal secretary John Nicolay, was probably the first draft of the address. It is the earliest copy of the Gettysburg Address in existence. It does not contain the words under God. There is no conspiracy here. Obama did not omit the words under God because he was trying to rewrite the Gettysburg Address as a secret ploy to promote a God-less society. Instead, he was participating in a history lesson. Perhaps this minor controversy will now alert many to the fact that there were different versions of the speech Lincoln gave on November 19, 1863.

Then why did all the other participants read the version with "under God" Oh I forgot He's the president that was going to bring change to the country. Well he fulfilled his promise, the country has sure changed.

A long time ago when I was a young, newly commissioned Army Officer in Basic Officer's Course, it was drummed into us that Respect is never given--it is EARNED. The office or position should be respected, but the person holding the office or position isn't necessarily respected.
The president's actions and words over 5+ years have done precious little to earn him respect & he has so insulated himself from the people that doesn't seem to give a damn.

He can't see past his own arrogance.

In this post, we have factual information is used to answer a claim about the President. Yet the posts afterward pay no attention to the truth, preferring instead to vent their hatred of Obama. This is why liberals have long seen conservatives as idiots - facts roll off them like water off of a duck.

No matter how many versions of the Gettysburg Address was written before the reading of the Address at Gettysburg, the one read at Gettysburg by Lincoln himself to the public is the one considered as
The Gettysburg Address. The one read by Obama shows him to be the man that he is. He pales in comparison to Lincoln. Facts roll off of Liberals like water off of a duck.

Gnsilngr,
Don't know whom your last post was for, but it was me, please be aware that I don' hate the president, I was taught that hate is not acceptable, but also know that I consider him to be the most glaringly unprepared, incompetent and out of touch man to ever hold the Presidential Office.
He was & is so poorly prepared that he's making Jimmy Carter look good.
Exactly, there were four "drafts" written and edited. the fifth draft became the "Gettysburg Address" as history and the journalists there so recorded. The errant four are not different versions as in revisions to be read at different occasions or to different audiences. Only the final draft was taken to the podium and spoken by Lincoln. In modern times we could compare it to a State of the Union Address by any President you choose. First drafts are generally developed 6-8 weeks out by the staff. Many "drafts " later the President speaks the words of his address. The previous drafts may be saved for a presidential library or university archives for historical reference. They are not different versions. Only the last draft becomes his State of the Union Address. Question? Would a future President give an unfinished draft version of a former Presidents' State of the Union as his.
