does anyone know of a good way to create a time lapse from a series of stills ?
QuickTime Pro. Import folder as frames.
There are several good free programs to make movies from still shots.
I can't remember the name of the one I used, but a quick Bing will lead you to plenty! :-)

I have tried doing time lapse. I found a good youtube tutorial by Gavin Hoey. Here is the link
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TM7EJZ-8HWw&lr=1&user=PhotoGavin He uses lightroom 3 to stitch the stills together. There is a link for a lightroom preset to convert to 24 frames per sec. video. I am a novice at using lightroom, but I found it pretty easy to do.
Also, this is a plug for lightroom. If you don't have it, look into it. It is a real good program for organizing picture files and making adjustments/corrections.
On my Nikon D7000 its called interval mode. Check your menu or manual for interval shooting.
