I was diddling with the salmon photos I took the other day. This is a close-up of the fins protruding from the surface of the river. I decided to play around with the image and get a bit artsy. Maybe too artsy, but it was fun

No, I think you nailed the artsy part of it just fine. How did you get that "mound" or build up in the water level near the leading fin?

The image was taken with a 400mm lens at about a 20 degree angle. The image was strongly backlit, so it presented a lot of glare on the surface of the water. This helped to make the riffles in the river to appear more smooth. I brought the image into a vector illustration program to achieve the masking of the background. I followed the curves from the riffles for my contouring so it would appear more natural, then dropped the sky in for some depth. I was basically looking for a surreal effect.

I'll attach the original shot.

Glad you did. Watching the salmon migrate is interesting to watch, but more difficult to photograph and have it look interesting. Lots of shots of the salmon jumping that tend to be boring after a while.

Best damn salmon art I've ever seen. The one that comes into second place is the salmon jumping into the open maw of a grizzly bear.

Thank you very much. I don't usually record natural history images for artsy effects. I was just bored and wanted to try something different. If you look at my other work, you will notice it is very natural looking. Thank you again for such a nice feedback.

Wow, now that is some excellent post processing. What program did you do this in?
