Somewhat surprisingly, the most decorated combat flight in U. S. history didnt take place in a major battle. It was a photo-reconnaissance flight; the flight of old 666′ in June of 1943.

As a side note, if a 40 minute air fight isn't
a major battle on the books, it certainly was
to the crew of old 666 !
