Very Nice example of how you said you like to use the moon in your pictures!

Thank you for your post. I love the effects of a long shutter in almost total darkness. The pictire was taken in the absence of any light except the moon. It is very difficult to cover the entire dynamic range so it is a toss up on what you lose. I am not entirely finished with it yet, but I am pleased with the raw stock. I have tried a gradient filter but it easier to mask the highlights PP.

1/5 of a second??? No wonder it is unrecognizable. The moon's reflected light is actualy more than adequate for a fast shutter speed.

My variation on a theme. I use the moon as a light source. I rarely shoot for definition. The picture was taken in total darkness and the dynamic range is like...tricky.

I do need to work on that focus. And I try to stay below f8 to not further soften the picture. This was manual focus. Not too bad with sweat in my eye. :-D

I did get exactly what I wanted though, and like I stress...always learning

Always

Another one. Total darkness except for the moon.

I REALLY want to photograph the moon.

So i went outside this evening to try photographing the moon. When i set up my shot, the moon nearly filled the view, then the camera automatically refocused and this is what I got. HELP???

Nikon D3200
VR 18-55mm F/3.5-5.6G
Focal length 55mm
Focus mode AF-A
AF Area mode Single
VR On

Aperture F/5.6
Shutter Speed 1/5s (I was stabilized on a fence)
Exposure comp 0EV
ISO 800

Thanks in advance.

I failed on two counts when first shooting the moon. Because it's so far away I even thought I might need a timed exposure. WRONG. And because it's so far away I thought I could just set the focus on 'infinity' and all would go well. WRONG! This shot is at 1250th sec at f 9.0 (the moon is very very bright) . . . and the focus was super critical even though near infinity setting. This is a 55-200 Nikkor DX lens. Not the best in the world, but will do in a pinch. A little PhotoPrint editing for sharpness. I had learned these lessons months ago, but came home hard again tonight.

Moon Over The Lake: Olympus SP500UZ; f2.8; Exp time 3.2sec; ISO 400; Exposure bias -1.3 stops; focal length 6mm.

Nighttime moonlight shot across a residential lake 14 miles west of Northport/Tuscaloosa, AL. Lower glow may be the city lights. Compared to pictures of the moon itself in this topic, much more exposure light needed.

I have taken many shots of the moon, probably a thousand or so. I have a
Canon SX 50 which has a 50X optical zoom and digital 200X. I use about
100-125X to get a good exposure. Most all my shots are handheld. I have
found the best settings for me are ISO 80 and Shutter speed on 40-100
depending on the phase of the moon. I have these numbers programmed
into C1 which is a memory mode. Sometimes I will shoot in Auto and the
camera will pick ISO 100 and shutter around the 100-125 Mark. Here is a
example from the other night.

I use a Canon SX 50. Saturn I used the full 200X digital zoom then
cropped it some more. The moon I had it on about 100X. The zoom is
50X optical and anything passed that is digital which means the camera
is doing the cropping. With the camera using this much zoom light is
cut down quite a bit so I have to lower my shutter speed a lot more than you normally would. I use ISO of 80 and shutter speed of 40. This is for
the moon as well as Saturn. I then post processing just a little in Photogene
which is a free app in my I-Pad. Both these were shot freehand, no tripod
used. The image IS in the Canon is quite good. I have also done Mars
and Jupiter which turned out very well. You can see the dark splotches
on Mars and the two big cloud belts on Jupiter. I also have done close up
shots of the moon on 200X which put you right there.

Dreaming of the next full moon.

I procured an 80-400 and have high anticipation.

There is some awfully good work here to live up to!

This is about our best one of Saturn. I use the Canon SX 50 and use all the
zoom of 200X ISO on about 80 and shutter speed on 40. I then crop it some
on my I-pad using Photogene and brighten just a little. Not much you can
do with it really. Saturn is in the eastern sky and rises here in Kansas City
around midnight. It is pretty bright.
