Before I do it....

Before I try to fit them on my d5100, I have 25 year old NIKON E series 50mm and an 80-200mm manual lens that I would like to try on my camera. Local wisdom runs both ways. Would it be "wise" to try or will it cause a trip to the repairman? Inquiring minds want to know.

Thistle - here's Thom Hogan's chart showing Nikkor lens compatibility with Nikon DSLR cameras, a good start point for you.

http://www.bythom.com/lensacronyms.htm

This next link is an invaluable website for Nikon camera and lens info going back "into the dark ages" ! It's not easy to navigate your way around this site, but there is a wealth of info .... if you can find it. I found this page on Nikon E Series lenses, and you will find info on your 50mm manual focus as you scroll down towards the bottom of the page.

http://www.mir.com.my/rb/photography/hardwares/classics/emfgfg20/eserieslenses/

Ken Rockwell speaks in very positive terms about E Series lenses here .....

http://www.kenrockwell.com/nikon/nikortek.htm#e

So ..... your 50mm lens will mount and meter with your camera.

Regarding your "old" 80-200 ..... you need to do some careful research, and know exactly which model lens it is. As Hogan says if it is "pre-Ai" then it will mount but not meter. Mir has 4 pages of discussion of the 80-200mm .....
