Does anyone know if and how Nikon's SB 600 and SB 910 communicate and trigger each other? I've read that they don't but find that hard to believe.

The SB 910 will work as a commander and trigger & control the SB600 but not the other way around.

I have an SU-800 unit to control mine, but the pop-up flash on some of the better models works great as a controller as well. Use one of these and there is no worry about the on-board flash affecting your photo: http://www.adorama.com/INKSG31R.html?gclid=CIjYzrLQ1boCFa1AMgodun4Aaw

Cool, but I use a D5100. I'm still searching youtube for a good tutorial about the controls on the two units and how to trigger. Thanks again, GN. (-:

Search for "Nikon CLS".
CLS = Creative Light System

It's really quite easy to setup and use.
And a darn shame the D5100 pop-up can't be a commander.

D5100 Manual p203ff: pop-up flash controls all (? See list p204) nikon flashes off camera. Not just firing them but setting their parameters also.

Your manual is your camera's best companion and is free.

Somewhat snide aside: it's also wonderfully indexed. No excuses!
How much did you pay for your 5100? And you let idiots misinform you rather than take 5 minutes go to the indexed page?

Ok, you read it and still have questions. Welcome!
Download it from Nikon.

You're right, of course, about the manuals, Patw. I HATE reading manuals and usually end up getting other more user friendly type manuals but I'll give it a try. I do have the manuals for the camera and both of those flashes. It's just my last resort. lol But I will give it a try now since you've shamed me into it. (-: Gotta go shoot a football competition in this freezing weather now. Brrrrrrrrr.

Pat - I'm not sure quite who the "idiots" are that you're referring to ...... but I can tell you this, both goofynewfy and Wall-E are highly knowledgeable when it comes to flash photography and their own advice is based upon very sound principles. Take a look at some of their recent posts about flash. And take another look at the D5100 manual regarding whether or not its pop-up flash will act as "commander". Then look up the Nikon SU-800 and see how it functions and why it might be placed in the "optional flash units" (pp202-205) section of this particular camera manual.

"And a darn shame the D5100 pop-up can't be a commander."...reason #2 why my next DSLR will have commander mode built into it.

Take a look a the Phottix Odin system. It's RF so no line of sight issues. I've used it for several months and thousands of shots with no misfires.

Wow! Lots of homework for me, craggycrossers! Thanks.

At the moment I'm completely exhausted from 7 hours of football shooting in some fairly crisp air. Even though I don't really know much about the game I got some really good stuff (IMHO). Ha! Thank God for Lightroom that allows me to apply a develop setting to the entire upload. I've been paying attention to what things I typically have to do to my events shot and I applied them all at once this time. Yippeeee!!! Saved me MANY hours of work since I took over 3000 shots. They'll be in three different galleries on my site which is certainly more managable than 3000 shots in one gallery! Yikes!

Once I get everything on the site by tomorrow night and then return from a 3 day workshop I'll dedicate some time to learning a LOT more about my flashes and how to use them in even more ways than I have been.

Thanks to ALL of you who contributed in one way or another to this thread.

Donna
