Book suggestions

Hi, I have just bought a copy of CS3 on Ebay, and will be using that to qualify for the 'photographers special' with Adobe CC. With my new SX50 out in the UPS truck on its way to my door, I have some learning curves to handle!

I have used old versions of PS for many years, and am currently using CS2. One advantage of using the old versions is that there are a load of books available from Amazon, used, at ridiculously low prices. I have bought some of the standard-sized tomes for as little as $0.01, plus $3.99 shipping!

I am excited that I am finally going to get my hands on a current version of PS, plus LR5, which I have never used at all. Being current, though, means the dozens of books out there are all current too, and therefore pricey!

I don't have much money left to spend, so I am looking for suggestions of books on PS & LR which you guys have found useful - especially for a rank beginner!

I realise that everyone has their own views on stuff, but a few ideas will help me a lot. I guess I can actually go to Borders and have a look at some of their stock, but there are probably whole shelves of them out there!

So, hit me! Any favourite authors, stuff like that. I do like the 'dummies' range, at least for a first step, but I don't see one of those available on Amazon for these programs - I only scanned through the first 20 or so screenfuls!

Thanks in advance.

Hi Bloke,

When I subscribed for the program(s) you are preparing to download I found Adobe had a fairly good library of how-to videos to help get started. Also, don't overlook YouTube, it has numerous videos that could prove helpful. I also have PS CS2 and the main difference you find between the two (and there are many) is the "content aware" features like move, fill, etc. Regarding inexpensive books: I've not run across any yet. Have fun with the new programs; you are in for some "real treats!" Take care & ...

If you can go to Borders, please tell me where!

I've been in Ann Arbor for decades, and watched Borders go from a used book store on State Street to a monolith to bankruptcy. Sad indeed!

I'm also new to PS & LR, and have found the Scott Kelby books to be helpful. That and a local community college course.

Are you sure you can achieve that? I would have thought it would have to be originally registered to you? If you can then adobe's policy has changed. It used to be you never "bought" anything from them, you only got a license.

Well, I hope so! I guess if not, I will be moving from CS2 to CS3! I chatted with one of the reps on the Adobe site yesterday, and he seemed to think that would work. I explained what I was doing, and he just wanted to know if I had the serial number yet, was all.

Thanks for the response. I already subscribe to the PP section, and I will check out the tutorials. I really work better with a book in my hands, though. I am watching some video tutorials at Lynda.com, but I still think I would need a manual/book of some kind.

I have used CS3 since it came out and I bought the Adobe book "Classroom in a Book". It comes with a CD with sample lessons included so you just have to transfer a lesson to your computer and follow along with the book. Best learning tool I have ever used and still use it occasionally.

You may want to look into classes at your local community college. They are usually available , and the instructors are often helpful in leading you to the info you are looking for. Your local library may also be a good place to look as they often have a book I can check out and study to see if it's worth buying.
