While on the beach one day, I saw these ripples over the shells on the outgoing tide. I thought it would be an interesting study if I could capture it. What do you think?

I like the second image best. I'm no expert by far, but maybe pop the color in the stones and a sublte filtering of your choice. That may create a more abstract effect.

I really like the second shot, an even tighter crop may bring more of an abstract feel to it.

They are interesting photos with good composition. Especially the second one. I tried a couple of edits on it highlighting the colors. If you are interested I would be happy to post them.

Please feel free to post the edits, as I am always interested in learning new ways of seeing things, and how others see ways to improve on my photos. The answer to what beach this is: it is called Shackleford Banks. It is a barrier island off Beaufort, NC that is part of the Cape Lookout National Seashore. It is only accessable by boat, and we had recently had a Noreaster come through that gouged out deep pockets of sand between the dune line and water. The water that had been trapped in the "holes" was finding its way back to the ocean at low tide. I am posting a picture of the beach as it looked that day.

I did a couple of things to highlight the pebbles. You're the judge as to whether it makes them show up any better. Please let me know what you think.

I think your edit is wonderful. How did you do that? I use Paint Shop Pro, and from what I can gather, it's not a real popular program, but it was what I could afford. If you wouldn't mind giving me the steps, I will see if I can find them in PSP. Your editing really makes things "pop" without looking fake. I appreciate you taking the time to do this and share with me.

I did it in OnOne Software Perfect Photo Suite 6 in the effects portion. I used several programmed effects adding them on top of each other and then applied a filter that I thought might be appropriate. You can download a trial copy if you want to try. Since you already have Corel Paintshop Pro, I tried it and by combining one step photo fix, local tone mapping and brightness and control in the adjust column I came up with this one below. I do have the new version of the Corel software and use it for some of the special effects it has. Most of my editing is done in CS5 but I am impressed with some of the specialty add on programs that have come out. It is a trial and error method to come out with what you want. If I can help you any more, please let me know.
