Max card size - SX50

I am just on the verge of taking the plunge and getting one of these babies, and I am trying to find out the niggly bits-and-pieces which help.

Has anyone put a 64GB card in an SX50? I have downloaded the manual, and I can't see anywhere which lists a maximum capacity. All the comparison figures are given with an 8GB and a 32GB, but as I have stated before on these hallowed pages, I am a believer in having the biggest card that will fit, and leaving it in there 'permanently'.

Thanks in advance...

Should be ok, but I never put larger than 16gb in mine. That stores plenty.

64GB cards are SDXC, 32GB is the highest SDHC card available. Make sure it is SDXC compatible before using an SDXC card in one.

I concur. You can shoot with a 16 until your finger is sore & you still won't fill it. Besides, with a 64, if it gets a hiccup, you will lose an awful lot of pics. :D

Well... I don't remove them from the card after each session. That's the secret. I upload them to the pc, but leave them on the card until it is close to full. That is the theory, although with my P&S I currently have about 1500 pictures (12 MP) and the card is about 4% full!

I plan on shooting raw+jpeg on the new one, so I will fill the card much quicker than this one. When it *does* get close to full, I then have to decide whether to replace it or reformat and use it again.

My philosophy is that leaving the card in there permanently removes any danger of physical damage. Leaving the data on there means I am not just using the 'beginning' of the card over and over again. Each 'cell' is effectively only used once.

This seems logical to me. My current P&S is my first digital camera, however, so I don't have the experience to back up my claim. The 32GB card in my camcorder gets full on a regular basis, so that gets reused. Probably 20 or 30 times now, I guess, with no problems.

Having said all this, I notice that there is a dramatic price increase between 32GB cards and 64GB cards, so I may well just get a 32 to be going on with. Ho-hum!

Thanks for the responses...

If this is the "Power Shot SX50 HS", Page 2 of the manual says:
"The following memory cards (sold separately) can be used, regardless of capacity. (emphasis mine)
- SD memory cards*
- SDHC memory cards*
- SDXC memory cards*
- Eye-Fi cards

*Conforms to SD specifications. However, not all memory cards have been verified to work with the camera."

Thanks. I didn't spot that. Having been stung before, though (bought a camcorder which was said by the maker to use 64GB cards, but it didn't... Fortunately, I was able to swap it with the 32GB in my powershot, and they were both happy with that.), I don't want to be stuck with a card (at those prices!) and nowhere to plug it in... I was hoping that someone out there was happily using one, and could confirm it for me. I think I will order a 32GB card for now anyway. Maybe try the 64 which is now in the old powershot, and see if it will work with that.

I am still going to keep the old camera in any case, since it fits so nicely in my shirt pocket.

Rambling a bit here, I know...

Thanks again.

As long as you FORMAT the card IN THE CAMERA after taking all pictures off, you should not have any trouble with it. I never take the card out of the camera and have never come close to filling a 16gb card. Shooting RAW+JPG-Fine an extended shoot might come close to filling a 16gb card. I use the cable to move the pictures from the camera to computer using the Canon Camera Window I believe it is. That way if I want to leave some of the pictures on the card, the next time it will only transfer the ones not previously transferred. I also either use that program or the camera controls to delete files, never the computer's "Windows Explorer" or file management system.

Do you know that they have a 128 GB card? I use 16GB and less... Never put all your eggs in one basket...
