If you've read only one book on the art of nature photography, there's bound to be a segment dedicated to flora. (I looked it up: "flora" means plants and such the like) And without fail the author (by necessity a professional photographer) will inevitably suggest you carry along in your tote bag a misting bottle of water... to mist the foliage, to enhance its appearance, like Wal-Mart does in its chilled produce section. Well, I think that's cheating, just plain downright deceptive. Okay, but what if you really ARE out when it's misting rain, or immediately after a shower, what if you take a picture of a beautiful flower with natures pure mist... that's perfectly okay with me, just like this one I took holding an umbrella because it was still misting rain
Honest... it really WAS raining
A lot of photos by Professional Photographers are "cheating"
Get over it and enjoy the art and have fun. :D :D
To each, his own opinion. Mine is that this is art, not photo journalism and whatever it takes to create the desired image is OK. You are trying to evoke feelings and emotions, not record a historical moment.

Point well taken. I retract and from this time forward carry a misting bottle in my camera tote... but I think I'll keep it filled with a bit of Rye... you know, to ward of the chills in case it really is raining.

By golly you've got me convinced. I'll up the anti and take along a five-gallon jerry can just in case it happens to be a desert environment. I wonder what a cacti photo would look like misted?
A 5-gallon jerry can full of Rye to ward off the chillÂ…sounds like a fun outing. ;-)
Oh heck, let's add some fuel to the fire. Water out of a misting bottle is just as much a part of "pure nature" as water simply falling from the sky. You are not altering nature because you and your misting bottle are a part of nature. Is a great picture of an elephant any less of a great picture just because he happens to be in a zoo? If you can't tell he's in a zoo, then it does not really matter. If I can't tell that you misted your flowers with a Jerry can of Rye, instead of waiting for the rain, then what difference does it make. Of course with Cacti, we run into a different dilemma. That same elephant dressed in a tuxedo just wouldn't look natural. So wet cacti might not evoke the same emotional response....although it does, occasionally, rain in the desert...Where was that can of rye!lol

It does indeed sound like a fun outing. Think we'll need our cameras?

mmm... well... if you're bigger and stronger and meaner than me... absolutely NO! I wouldn't dream of making fun of the Wild West !!!

Amen.
I'm an entertainer and actually, I would be out of work if I wasn't able to handle lying and cheating with skill. There would be no breath-taking magic if I couldn't.
Now ,there you go!!! Great sense of humor

A very pretty and nicely composed shot. I don't think it's cheating to mist, as nature doesn't always cooperate, but nothing wrong with being a purist, either, and I commend you for your integrity.

I could have used your expertise years ago when trying to lye and cheat with impunity (it's an ex-wife issue). But alas, I wasn't very skilled at it and got my skull cracked far too often. I'm a slow learner.

There's a TucsonCoyote fellow here that doesn't want me misting his cacti. Since I'm fairly confident he's bigger, meaner and tougher than I am, I'm going to bypass the southwest on my way toward California where I hope to mist some avocados.
