After all your advise, I went out this morning and took a few photographs with my Nikon D90.... To play safe, I kept it on auto. Please be kind.. :)
Your camera takes marvelous photos and your eye composes them very well. :-) It's scary to take that thing off auto. When are you going to make the plunge? Post the first results. When I did that mine were all black
Wild!! How did you turn your DSLR into a film camera?

It's digital print. After I download my photos to my computer, instead of adding a black border, I added a frame that looks like film, just something I do to my favorite prints.

Looks like you had a beautiful fall morning. Enjoy 'em while you can. Great shots. ;-)

I like your photos! I think you did very well!! I think the film borders are cute but they are distracting and over power your beautiful pictures. IMO. I really like the third one. I like the framing of the water.

Nicely done!!
When moving off Auto, start by going to Prog mode, play with it, then the Av and Tv modes and check them out good. Then if you feel like it, try manual. I personally find that using Prog, Av or Tv gets me what I am looking for a lot faster and easier than full manual, plus it means I am ready for most any situation.
You did great Rocky,good set
I use a D90 as well and don't realize if it has any other setting beside the "M". It only took a short time to understand about the settings and AF does the rest. ISO on automatic and everything is a go. Love you composition. Post some morewhen you get off AUTO.

Nice! Lose the film sprocket borders...they overpower the image...although I understand the nostalgia! The 18-105 is one of Nikons great bargains, up there with the 35, 50 and 85 f/1.8's.
Beautiful shots...you have a good eye for composition...I also have a D90...still learning all the bells and whistles after 2 years...but so much fun.
You've got a great camera to play with, the tried & true D90 is a oldie but goodie. There is nothing wrong with shooting in "Auto" first, in fact, that's a good way to learn the manual settings. Once you shoot in "Auto"...see what settings your camera used and you can tweak the settings to your own liking.

My first impressions of your shots are that you have a good eye for composition, light, color, line, texture, pattern.
But....decide where your focus is going to be and be sure you are locked on that spot. A few of the shots seems slightly out of focus. Also, the best part of getting off auto is to be able to get that great depth of field shot that you see others get. These shots would benefit from aperture priority to get either the whole shot in focus or one subject in sharp focus and the others in an acceptable out of focus or blurred background to enhance the image. We are here for you. Keep shooting!
Looks good Rocky except for the Nikon Part. LOL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
