I'm looking for any information about focusing screens.
If anyone has modified thier camera with these and any issues they have encountered.
I miss my focusing screen from my SLR days. I know it's still available on some upper end models but thats about it.
I have found a website that sells kits for pretty much any make\model. I'm just looking for some more information before persuing this further. Thanks in Advance.

Canon F1's and Nikon F series film cameras had different focusing screens available for special purposes - the focusing screen is a fresnel glass and its what you look at/through when you focus.

I know what the screen is...I just didn't know it could be modified or changed beyond the little dioptor on my Canon or the larger aftermarket rubber eye pieces available.

I didn't know they could be modified/added either until recently when I ran into this website, www.focusingscreen.com.
they sell kits so you can install them. I was very comfortable with this style of focusing and I liked it a lot more than trying to depend on autofocus. (I'm not the trusting type). If I installed this I could just turn off autofocus for the most part. I think autofocus has it's place but for most stills I would rather fine tune the focus manually.

Wait a minute...are we talking about the same thing ? I'm talking about the eye piece view finder...what I look through to take a pic....I never use the live view.

I don't have live view on my current camera (Canon 350D).
But on the focus screen, I like to use the split screen to fine tune my focus. All of my len's now have autofocus but like I said. I'm not the trusting type. I'd rather do it myself.

The interchangeable focusing screen went the way of the wind with digital, for the most past. There are a few high end digital SLR's that still have interchangeable screens, but not many anymore. I have 4 different screens for my Pentax 645 and 3 for my Nikon F5, but none for my digitals, live view has made them pretty much unnecessary for me, even with my failing eyesight. Good luck.

I could just use a little bigger view finder, maybe with a little magnification ! It's tough focusing with glasses, not to mention bi-focals ! I must be one of the minority that has a tough time setting up a shot with live view....hate it !

I'm a view finder person also, (My friend has a 7D with live view) he never uses it. I wear bi-focals and tend to see some softness even when the autofocus is turned on. I just think it's my old eye's trying to adjust. This is why I'd like to go back to using the split screen.

I do turn on the focus beeper for the AF points even though I focus manually ! It lets me know I'm there just in case the eyes are messing up !

Wouldn't a pair of glasses be cheaper?

We had a student in Photography School we called Eagle Eye. He had the most expensive equipment (Nikon) but never got his photos in focus. Finally in his second year he got glasses. His images improved but we still called him Eagle Eye.
