I often see references to the use of auto ISO. Why not set ISO yourself instead? You will still have the ability to change iso at any time. Why is it that I suspect that most persons using auto ISO have little understanding as to its relationship to shutter speed and aperture. Am I wrong in telling people who say they want to learn photography to turn auto ISO off?

Sometimes it's more fun and/or satisfying to concentrate on composition and not get bogged down in every technical aspect, especially if you are happy with the results you get from letting the camera take care of some of the exposure decisions :) (personally, most of the time I set aperture and ISO, and let the camera select shutter speed)

I can only tell you why I use auto ISO. It enables me to let the camera use it's sophisticated metering system and at the same time let me put the camera in the manual mode so that I can set the aperature for my chosen depth of field and the shutter fast enough to stop the action or slow enough to cause blur in a waterfall or stream. I hope that sheds some light for you.

I leave ISO at its minimum value - 200 on my D40 - because that should generally produce the lowest noise images and hence highest quality images. I increase it if there's no other way to get the aperture and shutter settings I want.

Charles, for the most part it is the total newbie "twiddling" with camera and no idea what he/she is doing. Don't like to have to mention the "film days" to explain things, but the sensor is the equivalent base for exposure that replaces film. For all we've heard about the Peterson book on exposure being the "triangle",it leads the newbie to try to think out and balance 3 things whereas they could/should set the basic sensitivity and then only have to consider the 2 other factors.
So they should first of all consider the situation. Is it a sunny day? Is it indoors? How much light do they have in any situation? Not paying attention to the basic light conditions they are working in can result in some unpleasant surprises since varying the ISO setting will necessarily affect aperture or shutter or both. It's the same old advice, read the manual, learn, practice. Each situation is different.

I recently used Auto ISO to capture balloons filled with water exploding over my sons head. This aloud for high shutter speeds in varies lighting conditions with no worries of capturing the shot. Nothing wrong with using auto ISO. I can think of lots of other scenario as well.

Everything has its place, time, condition.Anything used exclusively without thought to results is bound to fail in most circumstances just as someone would not use f11 or aperture f/4 for everything.

Not sure I understand your point.. My Point I capture a few dozen shoots using Auto ISO under varies lighting conditions with No Problems.. To me that is success, Super Easy, and using a feature my camera offers.....
No where did I say use auto ISO exclusively..
PS I see you have over 1000 thoughts/opinions/posted, but no photos. Have you ever tried Auto ISO
PSS I used F/22 for over 30,000 macro shots and never failed
Also Used F/9 over 1000 times for hand held stacked macro shots with no failures. Guess it depends if you Know how to use a Camera..

Thanks, I was demonstrating an Easy way to use high shutter speeds with Auto ISO for a local photo club here in central florida. Must have been hi-jacked if out there on the web as the club is for members only.
