Would like to hear how you delete your photos off your camera?
Is it bad to let the computer do it? Does this corrupt the card?
Or do you reformat your card in camera.
What's the best and least damaging way?
All comments appreciated.
Deleting individual photos from the card is fine whether the card is in the camera or connected to the computer via a card reader. But only reformat the card when in the camera as the camera will create the correct hidden files on the card. If you format the card on the computer it may not work in the camera - even if it does, I wouldn't trust it to always work properly.
I always reformat in camera, I was told there was to much that could happen if you reformat with your computer (wrong file system for example).
I don't delete off camera, I delete when culling images in Lightroom.
I have not had any problems deleting files from the camera. Saves a lot of room with D800 RAW files. Only reformat in the camera for the above reasons.
I use the format function in camera to delete/format my card.

On another forum I'm with we've discovered over several years that deleting photos from your card with the camera is not a good idea because it can eventually corrupt the card.
The safest way is to upload at the end of every shooting day, then format the card in the camera once you know your files are safe on your computer. The format will erase everything from the card.

I've read the same thing. Spot on advice!
Thanks for the quick responses . I have always deleted from computer occasionally single pics off camera. I keep hearing how this will corrupt your card. So I will change to reformatting card in camera.
Nikon D7000 and Nikon P510
1. Make a folder on computer hard drive ie., 21 Oct 2013 D700
or 21 Oct 2013 P510
2. On each camera plug in USB Cord, highlight all the files for 21 Oct and MOVE them to the computer
3. Files disappear, no formatting needed.

Rarely do I delete in camera, unless I'm stuck somewhere without a spare card and need some space. I will transfer the pics to my computer, make sure they are there, pop the card back into my camera and format it in camera. Then I will go through the pics that are now on my computer and delete the ones I don't like.
Probably everyone here will have a different opinion on the best way. Some will say to never format it in the computer because it could cause problems when putting the card back in the camera, but I've seen some say they do it and have never had a problem. Really it comes down to what works best for you.

The ONLY reason to format a memory card in your computer, is if you CAN'T format it in-camera.
Some have had luck resurrecting an otherwise unusable card by doing that then doing an in-camera format.
My take on that is that memory is cheap. If it failed once, it's WAY more likely to fail again. Dump it and move on.
Format in camera and delete from camera as soon as I see they are so bad I don't want to look at them again let alone letting someone else see them. - Dave

Deleting single pics in camera is a basic, standard camera function...I don't believe the manufacturers would include it if it was going to cause problems with your memory cards...I've done it for years and never had any problems...after downloading the rest to my PC I delete the rest by in camera formatting...
