You need to change your perceptions of what is bad and what is good lighting.
The heavy cloud cover actually made for very good lighting.
Hopefully these shots you have taken show you why.

Yes, NOW they are nice shots... AFTER some PP. These are salvaged images. No... it was bad lighting. Trust me. :)
