I'll have a look at it Rich - seen others mention Topaz on UHH but I'm not sure what it does over PS - one way to find out! Thanks for the tip.

Anything else I should have done to improve my chances of a good image? They are rutting now, so one needs to be careful.
Shoot manual exposure, drop the ISO to 12800 and use a monopod.
I guess using a flash is right out

I wanted to take some shots of deer at our local reserve, but wanted them in the woods, not open countryside. I was using my 100-400 lens with a 1.4x extender, so max aperture available was f8. With ISO set to auto, that became super-high due to the lack of sunlight in some areas and, hence, images are grainy. I'm not unhappy with them, but think now that I should have dumped the extender as a lot of shots were actually within the lens focal length. Anything else I should have done to improve my chances of a good image? (apart from chase them into the sunlight!). They are rutting now, so one needs to be careful.

I did a quick & dirty attempt using Topaz Denoise trial version. Hope you don't mind. This is a beautiful animal & you did extremely well to get him at all.

Yes, I can give manual a try next time, but not sure it's a great advantage - I could fix the ISO for sure, but the aperture is limited anyway - with the 400 lens at f5.6 or extender at f8. Don't think I'd manage with the monopod - I thought about it at the time but decided I'd end-up base over apex because the grounds so undulating, soggy and thick with undergrowth. Anyway, you've given me something to think about. Thanks for you help and time - much appreciated.

Hey, that's nice cameranut - definite improvement - perhaps I'll go for the 30-days trial with Topaz and see how I get on. Many thanks for your interest and trouble - much appreciated.

I commented on that to my wife - the whole harem, including offspring, are still around the stag. They seem to stand to one side while the boys argue among themselves as to who owns them!

I realize that but what I'm saying is the ones that were Born here last may , and now there the same size as there parent . there about the size you show here in pic2 in July . but we have a lot smaller deer here than they do 30 miles away on the Vancouver main land

Your buck has attitude up the kazoo! Your doe & fawn are precious; can I take some lessons? Superb! Marcie

magnetoman do you know where Wells Next To Sea is. Back in the early 50's I lived there for 27 months when I was in the Air Force. I really liked it in that village and of course the Pub and the paints of Mild. Met a lot of wonderful people. I only wish I kept in touch but such is life....Rich

That's on the Norfolk coast, I think, Rich. About eight years back, when I was still riding vintage motorbikes, I did our National Rally, an overnight thing, on my 1960 Velocette and one of the check-points was at Wells next the Sea. Don't recall too much about it, but a saddle bolt had come loose and disappeared, so I phoned forward from there to Wisbech, where an old pal turned-up a replacement for me! Love the coast, just about anywhere.

It was my pleasure to work with something as magnificent as your deer. If you try the trial version I'm pretty sure you will want to buy it. I know I will when the trial is up. That was about the 6th. photo I've worked on in Topaz. Just imagine what someone with lots of experience & skill could do with it. It is soooo easy to use.
