This shows a small portion of an old granite quarry at a nearby county park which I took earlier this afternoon. I'm an amateur that needs to work on composition and exposure. This is the first time I've asked for a critique since joining about 2 weeks ago. This is a great forum. I've already learned a lot from it.
iso 200 f/18 1/125 0ev 40mm
Sony SLT a33 18-270 Tamron lens
I used manual mode and manual focus.

Welcome aboard, Mary.

I like the composition - I see a bit of thirds and triangles, it looks sharp and the exposure looks pretty good.

This could easily be a spot for a couple more photos: maybe go a little wider; shoot to the right and go to portrait mode; move back a little and get more of the water; perhaps even a four-seasons series.

I've added some more photos to this thread of the same quarry at different times throughout the year and from different viewpoints. What do you think of them? The last one was another one I took today that shows more water (ice) and sky.

There you go! I really like the balance in #3 good light, Calm water, clear sky, the brush in the lower right( there, but not intrusive or distracting to the shot.) A clear view of the Quary....

I'll tell you, those rocks have a great pattern; especially when they are side lighted...how about a close up of just "pattern"....?

Great idea, rpavich. I'll try to get the pattern of the rocks.

All your shots are pleasing to the eye ! One thing about shots like the first one, the time of day is a HUGE factor that affects the whole feel of the shot ! When I do a shot such as that I'll keep going back at different times of the day and get the same shot ! You'd be amazed how different light can affect shots...especially the first one !

The thing I have to learn most about with photography is composing. I seem to be like the supreme court judge who couldn't define porn...but knew it when he saw it.

I too like the Sep. 23rd best.

I wonder if it can be improved a little by modest cropping.

One of the things I have learned recently, particularly with regard to landscapes, is that the photographer has to be clear about the subject and lead the eye to it. A good rule is to place that subject using the rule of thirds; i.e. at the crossing of the top and right line if you overlay a tic-tac-toe grid on your pic.

On this one the lightest area where the wall meets the water seems to me to be that point. Cropping a bit off the left and top might move that to the prime location.

Might be worth a try, anyway, to see if you like it.

Regards,
Larry Leach

Thought I'd try my suggestion. I didn't like it as much as your original.

Here's another thought using the rule on the turned tree. Cropped and flipped.

Resolution will be a little weak because you didn't store the original on this one so I used the thumbnail.

You're right, nyweb2001, I really need to get shots of the same spot at different times of the day. Though I'll wait until next spring to do that.
