I need your opinion regarding upgrading my two prime lenses. I have for years used and enjoyed my 50 1.4 and 85 1.8 Nikon lenses. They work great when I can't use a flash. I've read that the d or g equivalents are the way to go now. I love what a prime can do in low light. My question is would I be gaining that much by upgrading. I shoot a D700. I have 2.8 zoom lenses I can use if I am allowed to use a flash. I'm new to the Hog, not a pro, but a little better than average. Thanks for your opinions.

Nikons "D" series AF lenses simply add the feature of transmitting Distance info to the cameras processor, this is helpful in flash settings mostly. The newest lenses are "G" lenses, most all of which are also "AF-S" lenses meaning they have an internal electronic focus motor inside the lens. The "G" stands for "Gelded" indicating these lenses do not have a manual aperture ring on them so aperture must be set with the sub-command dial of the camera body.
All will work with your D700 body, but the AF-S G lenses will autofocus faster than AF or AF D lenses.

Thanks Mt. I realize that, but I really would like your opinion regarding if the upgrade would be worth the expense. Would I be gaining that much by upgrading. would using a flash with a non d model be that much worse than on a d model.

The G lenses will yield the best compatibility with Nikons Creative Lighting System products. I am pretty sure the D700 is CLS compatible, but not positive. The D lenses will definitely work better with TTL flash than non-D lenses. Whether the upgrade is worth the money only you can decide based on the results you are achieving with what you have now and where you want your photography to go.
