It looks like the sun was your worst enemy, the angle of light coming from behind the birds, and reflecting off the water.
It is possible a Circular Polarizer Filter could have blocked a lot of the water surface reflections.
For the images you now have MetaGrad has some very useful filters for reducing the effect of reflections (Graduated Polar Neutral density. It will depend on the image editing software you are using. If your software will accept "Plugins", and those plugins have the ".8bf" extension MetaGrad will work.

Thanks for your suggestion. Unfortunately, I do not have a polarizer for my 80-400mm, so your option is a good one.
