I am using an iMAC with Firefox. I have bookmarked many sites for future reading and reference. I would appreciate any help in rearranging the bookmark list. I searched and could not find any way or reference to how to change the order of the bookmarks in the bookmark list. Any help will be welcome. Thanks in advance for the information.

Just how do you wish to re-organize the bookmarks?

I want to move some of the latest ones that appear on the bottom of the list up closer to the top of the list for easier access. Also perhaps group some in the same subject area for easier finding.

If you go to the bookmarks tab and click show all bookmarks and you will be able to sort by name. To sort for any other set up you will have to do on a per file basis and point & click into folders.

I've used Firefox for years and have about a thousand or so bookmarks. I organize by category. If you click on you bookmark icon, click bookmark this page, click on the drop down menu for folder, click choose and then New Folder. Name your folder by category - Photography, News, Locations, Computers, Security and so on. You can then go through this for each new bookmark and put in folder or, like I do, once a week or so drag and drop uncatalogued sites into folders.

Use a system of organization that works for you. I also label one Temporary or To Read for items I do not wish to save long term. When I finish - right click on the link and delete.

Works for me. Hope it helps.

Larry

Kitcar:

I did try what you suggested but the folder keeps going back from whence it came. Does not stay where I put it. Will try the suggestion again.

I have used Firefox almost since the initial release. I currently have 26 folders covering different subjects with many hundreds of bookmarks. Left click on the bookmark dropdown box, right click in the list, left click on 'New Folder', give it a name and start loading up your new folder(s) by dragging & dropping your bookmarks. You can also move a folder into another folder to create sub directory folders.

Will give you all the background.

I use Delicious to mark my bookmarks on line. Take a look, it has worked very well for me.

Thanks to Paul57 and Steveo52 for your suggestions. Also again thanks to all others who responded. I have it figured out now and the folder option will make my sorting easier. The link to Firefox on bookmarks will be of great value for me.

I stopped using Firefox because when your computer crashes you have to reload your bookmarks from a backup, if you have one. Mozilla has a utility to backup/restore bookmarks easily, but you have to do it.
I've been using Google Chrome and Icloud and do not have to backup my bookmarks. It's very easy to have access to you bookmarks from any device and it's not stored on your computer. Same with Gmail if you're using Thunderbird for email.

I use a Gateway PC so the method may be different from your mac version but here's a tip.

With your bookmarks menu open simply left click and hold a particular bookmark. While holding it move it to where you want it in the list... done.

Try this: Choose the place where you want your bookmark to be relocated and right-click there; click on "Separator"; this will create a separator line not very visible; drag the bookmark you want relocated just above that separator line and it will stay there even if is not in alphabetical order. For general learning, let us know whether it works for you. It does for me.
