I am surprised that I have not seen any pictures on the forum of these amazing AC-72’s and the America’s Cup Regatta. This forum has had a few recent threads about the America’s Cup. There have been some informative and thoughtful posts by TonyP, Mike Gallagher and other folks, mostly from New Zealand and Australia. I have followed world class sailing for a many years and I am not naive about the behavior of the super rich individuals and syndicates that support the sport. But I don’t care about the silly behavior at the top. This regatta was held in my front yard and these AC-72’swere just too interesting and too beautiful to ignore. It was a pleasure to watch the sailors on all four boats as they visibly improved their handling of these tricky things. It was also a pleasure to see so much good sportsmanship demonstrated by participants and fans. I think the New Zealand sailing culture and the crew of ETNZ stand very tall in the world of international
yachting. I look forward to seeing another A C Cup on the
San Francisco Bay.

Lovely photos. I had one of the best nights of my life when Australia beat the US way back in 1983 (I think). Our then Prime Minister Bob Hawke who enjoyed a beer in those days, said at the time (in the wee hours) "Anyone who sacks an employee for not turning up tomorrow is a bum" He is quite famous for that quote.

There is a long tradition of blue water racing in both New Zealand and Australia. Here, we have been following it with interest as the US boat had an Australian skipper and a largely Australian crew.
An Australia syndicate has now put its hand up for the next challenge.

I have also been following some of the great shots you have posted here and look forward to the next series and hopefully some more of your shots.

I think the loss to AuII in '83 was good for the sport. These new classes of twin hull boats are quite spectacular.

Thanks again for the postings.

Oliver.

I think I read that NZ PM was quoted after the 19th race as saying "BUGGER".
Thanks for looking and the kind words.

hi, were you on the water for these shots? Lovely words about our own ETNZ, and Dean Barker thanked the city Of San Fran, wholeheartedly, I'll post his words in Chit Chat, you need to know how much your hospitality was appreciated. Cheers, Nancy J

You got some great shots! I prefer the yachts but I admit these catamarans have it on the yachts in regard to speed. We watched all the races on tv and thoroughly enjoyed them. Years ago we saw some of the AC racing yachts when they were in port in Newport, RI.

Hi Nancy J, Thank you for the kind comments. These pictures were taken from the shore at Crissy Field. I was directly across from the first mark and the reach from the start box came straight toward me. At their closest point, the boats were 1/2 mile away. Hope to see you in San Francisco in 3 or 4 years. Cheers, Phil

As is true in all "Pro Sports". Makes me value youth and amateur sports all the more. Thank you for the comment Kingmapiz.
