A "contest" to have a localized place to see what images this great group of people can come up with for the last (total) lunar eclipse until 2014!
This will be a place for us discuss the images that we create and learn to improve our photography
See the contest here:

Nice contest, but I see your first photo is NOT of the eclipse, but simply a full moon shot, and was posted hours before the eclipse actually took place. Not exactly what you intended is it?

I am new to this forum but also an astronomer. The full moon is not in eclipse. What is the purpose of it in the contest?

I guess this is where we comment on the images. The Idaho image is by far the best. It shows the umbral portion of the eclipse very well and the hill in the foreground is a nice composition element. Several of the others also have the umbral reddish glow. Some are a bit washed out, probably because Sun was coming up. Eclipses at or near sunrise are a bit tricky.

I had not planned on watching or photographing the eclipse but dog woke me up at 4:30 AM so I went out to have a look. It was early as the umbral portion of the eclipse didn't start until about 6:00 AM. I set up with my Nikon D90 and 70-300mm lens. I was too lazy to get out my 76mm refractor telescope. In retrospect, I should have used the scope. I didn't get any good umbral images and the others got a bit grainy because I used a high ISO.

Some great pics so far, Utah is my favorite. East Coast here, so no chance of picture taking here, but I got last years eclipse, so I am not too disappointed.

That thread is not the contest, the contest link is in the first post...

A lunar eclipse can ONLY happen at full moon.
A Solar eclipse can ONLY happen at new moon.

I didn't mean to confuse anyone by putting the moon shot in the admin's thread, I just wanted to draw attention to the links...

I posted my shot in the contest, we had cloud cover for most of it :-(
At least it was warmer here than for some of you. It was a balmy 18 degrees. Should have brought iced tea instead of coffee...

Wow! There are some beautiful shots

Nice "fun contest" Beautiful pictures. I just have one question:
Weren't the rules that only one picture could be submitted by each photographer? I see a beautiful montage made from 4 pictures !!! Was this allowed? Is it fair to the rest of the participants? Just wondering...

I was up at 5:30 the morning of the lunar eclipse to witness the amazing beauty of the cosmos at work. Love the photos, got some of my own I'd like to post after I digitally develop them.

Rare event: the sun and moon can be seen at the same time ...

"But wait! How is this possible? When we have a lunar eclipse, the sun, Earth and moon are in a geometrically straight line in space, with the Earth in the middle. So if the sun is above the horizon, the moon must be below the horizon and completely out of sight (or vice versa).

And indeed, during a lunar eclipse, the sun and moon are exactly 180 degrees apart in the sky; so in a perfect alignment like this (a "syzygy") such an observation would seem impossible.

But it is atmospheric refraction that makes a selenelion possible.

Atmospheric refraction causes astronomical objects to appear higher in the sky than they are in reality.

For example: when you see the sun sitting on the horizon, it is not there really. It's actually below the edge of the horizon, but our atmosphere acts like a lens and bends the sun's image just above the horizon, allowing us to see it.

This effect actually lengthens the amount of daylight for several minutes or more each day; we end up seeing the sun for a few minutes in the morning before it has actually risen and for a few extra minutes in the evening after it actually already has set.

The same holds true with the moon, as well."

But, I'm assuming that even would be very difficult to photograph; to capture both sun and moon.
