I used aperture f/2.8 to shoot the cranefly, focusing only on the eyes to create an interesting bokeh. This is a 2 stack image. I included the hoverfly image because I just love photographing them.

thanks Linda, I just wanted to try a different approach than just getting everything in focus. Glad you found it interesting.

I'm curious about the focus-stacking thing, how you go about that (with moving objects)?

The craneflies here are moving around in the grass on my lawn, I guess what with the change in temperature they are just slowing down and at the end of there cycle. I usually start off about 6 feet away and slowly creep up on them with my camera in position to shoot. I pre-set to 1:1 using manual focus, and just try to get closer and closer until they are in focus and then I just shoot as many shots as I can as smoothly as I can, I usually have it in live view with x5 magnification which helps with the focusing. You will be amazed in that sometimes they just stay where they are, I think they are just as curious as we are. UHH member fstop22 is the master at handheld focus stacking. I am just learning the art. Just 2 stacks can have an enormous effect on the final image, all it takes is practice. Give it a shot Linda and don't worry about the mistakes just keep at it. Good luck.

Excellent detail on the Cranes Steve. First photo - focusing on just the eyes is well done.

Nice set Steve. I really like the first one for it's DOF, and bokeh. The muted browns are interesting and accentuate the crisp focus on the eyes. Nice job. Mike

Focus Stacking = A final single image composed from at least two original digital captures, each displaying a different part of subject in focus. Most useful in macro-photography, where DoF is always quite shallow. By combining several shallow DoF images of a stationary subject, a single image with extended DoF can be rendered. A Focus Stacking program must be used to compile images.
