I came across this display while driving alongside a railroad track. The light tan and green boughs were displayed so attractively against a dark background that it stopped me as I was driving by and induced me to back up and look closer. This is definitely a weed, growing about 5 to 6 feet high, and was in company with a whole host of goldenrod (cropped out for effect). Does anyone know what this is?
Willowy boughs but definitely a weed
I referred this photo to a friend of mine at the NC Agricultural Department, and this is his reply:
"Hi Bob, great to hear from you, I see you still have the eye for striking photos! Looks like Dog-fennel; my old books say the latin name is Eupatorium capillifolium
Not a grass, but a weed in the family Asteraceae. Asters are a huge family that includes ragweed, goldenrod, sunflowers, etc."
It's not what you know, it's who you know .....
